North York - NOT sushi

I'm at Yonge and 401 and while I like Sushi, I'm looking for something good for dinner other than Japanese. Any recommendations in this vicinity?

Too late for you, but for chinese options north of 401 there is congee wong at leslie/finch and Sunstar on finch west of leslie.

Not sure what you consider in the vicinity, but The Steak Pit is a quick hop over to Avenue Rd. and and a bit south (but still North of Lawrence ave.). Great "old school" BBQ ribs!

annamac...be forewarned... decor has not changed since the 60's (LOL) and I understand the steaks are "just ok". (I've never ordered one...) Salad (slightly improved) , relish tray and garlic bread (complimentary) are fine, but nothing special.

But the "Mexican" (sauced) ribs are as good as ever! and worth the trip, IMO!

I know you said no Japanese food, but there's a Izakaya restaurant across the street from Empress walk Loblaws is worth checking out. It's not sushi but lots of different tapas. It's called Tzuki Izakaya.

Is it Japanese owned and operated?

          +1 re: TorontoJo's recs.

North of the 401, I like Mot Na Son. South of the 401, I like Auberge du Pommier and Milagro.

If you don't mind going 2 minutes south of the 401, there are many better choices than north of the 401. If you want super casual, the much vaunted Burger's Priest is there, as is Trio, a great casual neighbourhood Italian spot (who were doing Neopolitan pizzas long before Libretto made it trendy). Stack Smokehouse is also there if you want a broadly appealing menu in a "upscale casual" environment. They had some opening kinks to work out, but it sounds like they are doing way better. Save room for the s'mores doughnuts.
