Food to Eat Driving Through Virginia?
Next Sunday, I'll be driving from Washington D.C. to Asheville, North Carolina, which will have me on Interstate 81 through most of Virginia. Looking for lunch somewhere in the middle. I was excited to go to Gertie's Country Store until I found out that they are closed on Sunday. Does anyone have any suggestions? Somewhere between Vesuvius and Buchanan would seem to make sense for the lunch hour.
What type are you looking for?
Lexington would probably be your best bet in the area, since that is where Washington&Lee and VMI are.
I haven't eaten there yet, but I have wanted to try the Southern Inn restaurant. they are open 10-8 on Sunday but I would call ahead to see if it is only brunch or if they are doing regular lunch menu. Since the the number of brunch items is very small, I would guess isnt all they serve then.
However, Southern Inn is more like fine dining, with locally sourced beef, etc; not very comparable with Gertie's. So if you are looking for more down to earth type places, you might try the Kenney's Drive-in in Lexington, there is another in Buena Vista a few miles east of I81 in a little town nestled in the blue ridge mountains. I dont know if it is still open anymore though, it reminds me a bit of Wright's Dairy-Rite in Staunton.
Unfortunately Staunton Grocery has closed, or I would have sent you there.
Staunton has a few more choices but is a bit north of your target area.
