Oiishi Sudbury

So I've always had really hit and miss experiences at Oiishi in Sudbury. I realize this is not the general consensus, but I live here and have eaten there a lot, so whatever. Sometimes it's great and sometimes it's not. (takeout's even more of a crapshoot) However, I thought I should report that the last few times we've eaten here it's been exceptional and I'm inclined to go back more often. Went this week and they'd changed up some specials and we were impressed.
We had:
Baby hamachi with hot peppers - my favorite. Hamachi Sashimi, ponzu sauce, little spicy pepper, and cilantro on top. As good as it sounds.

Crispy rice salad - actually maybe this is my favorite. :-) Crumbled up rice cake, micro greens, chopped tuna, snow crab, raw scallop. Really perfect combo of textures and flavors and pretty addictive. There's a picture of it somewhere on their website.

Smoked hamachi - our least favorite, but the prep was interesting. Cubed hamachi in a bell jar type thing with smoke inside. Tasted ashy or something to me. Still ate some, but wouldn't get it again.

Lobster tempura roll - typical but good. Lobster was moist inside the tempura batter.

Amy's maki - I always like their Customers creations. We usually get the Paula's maki which really can't be beat, but Amy's was nice for a change. Eel inside, hamachi outside, ponzu.

Spicy crispy toro gunkan - we a,ways get this, kind of a guilty pleasure. It's like spicy tuna roll filling on a Nigiri instead of maki. But instead of typical gross spicy tuna filling (like the pink slime stuff) they chop the tartare themselves.

Overall great meal (and too much food for two people, clearly). I usually prefer Aka Bistro for my raw fish fix, but we'll hit Oiishi more often and hope they keep it up.
