For a special treat for your daughter, visit Le Petit Rouge, a cupcake bakery with children's book themes, inside Reading Reptile, a children's bookstore in Brookside-
If you phone ahead she might whip up an extra special treat. You'll love it too :)

re: bbqboy
Reading Reptile is a great suggestion. Woodyard BBQ is good (pulled pork, amazing) and kind of a unique experience - tables outside, fun for my kids. Portions are large so it can be economical if you share. Frtiz's would be a blast for the birthday! Cheap, too. If the parents want to hold off on eating, across from Fritz's is D'Bronx (in crown center) which has great pizza (whole or by the slice) and sandwiches. I've got 3 kiddos and live here so if you need other suggestions, let me know.

For the birthday girl, I would recommend going to Crown Center and going to either Fritz's or Crayola Cafe. Both are geared toward kids. The food isn't great, but she will definitely remember the experience. At Fritz's, the food is delivered to your table by a miniature train. She will be occupied watching the trains travel around with food for quite a while! Here at the websites: http://www.crayolacafe.com/ and http://www.fritzskc.com/.

You will get better info if you provide more info.
What is your location? Do you have a car? How far are you willing to travel? How old is the child? What type of cuisine are you most interested in?
Make it a little more detailed, and the KC hounds will give you great advice.›4 Replies-

Thank you.
I'm new here and appreciate the guidance.I do have a car and am willing to drive up to 30 minutes for a meal. We will be staying at a hotel in Independence, MO, and will be touring around both KC, MO and KC, KS.
We like everything except Ethiopian (sorry) and would like a variety of meals. No chains. Love Vietnamese, Thai, Southern, Creole, BBQ, seafood, French, Indian, sushi.
The child is a girl turning 2 so I thought a fun place with good desserts would work. The older eaters want non-childish options.
We are on a tight budget so nothing pricey and no sports bar types.
Thanks.

re: cecitessa
I will tell you it has been a couple years since I've been down to KC, but when I go the first stop after I leave Des Moines is LC"S BBQ for a plate of burnt ends. Small place, bars on the windows, mostly carry out. The kind of place you would expect to find good Q. Get it at lunch time to go if you have little ones.
Southern? If you are into fried chicken, Strouds is world famous. I liked it fine, but it's almost a must go in KC.
Go up and do a search for Kansas City. Lots of info. The bbq threads used to generate hundreds of post alone.
KC is fun. Check out the Negro league baseball museum, and the attached jazz museum. -

re: Bobfrmia
1) Strounds is an excellent recommendation...best fried chicken in the US.
2) BBQ...only two that are first rate: Bryants (be SURE to order the beef sandwich and fries) or Okla. Joes
3) Indian...the very best in town is clearly Chai Shai at 59th and Holmes
4) Steak...by far the best in town (and best environment) is Capital Grille on the Plaza
5) Sushi...and a fun place...Nara at about 16th and Main
6) German...only one in town...Grenaur in Crossroads (its Austrian, actually).Stick to these and you will have sampled the best KC has to offer...guaranteed!
