Light brown sugar caramel topping? help!!

Im doing smitten kitchen's pinapple topping.\ How is it suppose to look? Is it suppose to melt down into a caramel sauce or stay sugary? ( like it did, but i threw out??) This is for her pinapple upside down cake.

    Not sure about her recipe, but generally you would melt the butter, sprinkle in the sugar, then slowly cook it down to dissolve the sugar. It sounds like you didn't cook it long enough.
