Classic Foods from Manhasset area?
I am looking to get a gift for my dad who grew up in Manhasset in the 50's/60's. I would love to find something essential to that area I could order for him that would bring back fond memories. Any ideas?

The only food-related place that I can think of that is still around from the 50’s and 60’s is now called Edison’s – a popular bar/restaurant. It has had a few other names over the years including Publican’s and Dicken’s. It is a Plandome Road institution, probably best known for hamburgers and beer. Not very gift-worthy items. However, there is a memoir, The Tender Bar by J.R. Moehringer, that chronicles the author’s youth in Manhasset and specifically the time he spent at Publican’s/ Edison’s as a kid, that is very good read. http://www.amazon.com/The-Tender-Bar-A-Memoir/dp/0786888768
And there is another title, Manhasset Stories, that tells of growing up in Manhasset in the 50’s & 60’s. http://www.amazon.com/Manhasset-Stori...

The single memorable food from Manhasset has to be the famous, fabulous, popovers from Patricia Murhpy's. Here's a thread about the place. The restaurant is long gone. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/253682 Found some more links:

This is about the NYC location, but it evokes the era and atmosphere really well:
