Classic Foods from Manhasset area?

  • 4

I am looking to get a gift for my dad who grew up in Manhasset in the 50's/60's. I would love to find something essential to that area I could order for him that would bring back fond memories. Any ideas?

  1. Would he have gone to Louie's in Port Washington??
They have changed hands, but maybe it would make him feel nostalgic for seafood from home.

    1. The single memorable food from Manhasset has to be the famous, fabulous, popovers from Patricia Murhpy's. Here's a thread about the place. The restaurant is long gone. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/253682 Found some more links:

This is about the NYC location, but it evokes the era and atmosphere really well:

She had a sister and that restaurant was Lorraine Murphy's....if you remember they knocked it down and built a Bennihanna there...(I was the plumbing contractor for Bennihanna's)

      2. The only food-related place that I can think of that is still around from the 50’s and 60’s is now called Edison’s – a popular bar/restaurant. It has had a few other names over the years including Publican’s and Dicken’s. It is a Plandome Road institution, probably best known for hamburgers and beer. Not very gift-worthy items. However, there is a memoir, The Tender Bar by J.R. Moehringer, that chronicles the author’s youth in Manhasset and specifically the time he spent at Publican’s/ Edison’s as a kid, that is very good read. http://www.amazon.com/The-Tender-Bar-...

And there is another title, Manhasset Stories, that tells of growing up in Manhasset in the 50’s & 60’s. http://www.amazon.com/Manhasset-Stori...
