Chicago 58. Where have you gone?

Some of you may remember the good old days when Chicago 58 meat products ruled the day. Their salami was superior to any all beef you could find, along with the all beef hot dogs and their cured brisket. That was when they were at their original location on Lipincott, near Kensington Market. A

Alas, they got too big and got the urge to venture north to that bastion of Jewish style meats and attitude........Woodbrdge! You used to be able to find their products at many of the chain stores and the usual haunts. Loblaws carries the smaller sizes but not the dogs. Does anyone know if the new factory has a retail outlet? Where is this place? No offense, but I'm not going all the way up there unless I know there is a hot dog and salami at the end of the rainbow!!

FYI, They don't make the products on site like the good old days. Products are now prepared for them under their label. To me the taste of the salami is slightly different now, compared to the old school process they used.
It's still my favorite salami.

All the good ones have gone. Bought by corporations and changed recipes too save money.
unfortunately not too many of us remember the old days. Even open window bakery gone !!

Chicago 58 salami is everywhere, man. I see it at No Frills even. Not hard to find.

The hot dogs? Probably harder to find than the salami, yeah. I’m sure Nortown has them. No?

My local Shoppers Drug Mart carries Chicago 58 hot dogs, I just noticed.

They also carry the salami.

IIRC, I've seen the salami at the North York Highland Farms.

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to call them up, ask to speak to the marketing department and find out where there's a retailer near you.

FWIW, we did a blind taste test of 6 different hot dogs among which was C58 and they didn't win. The Juicy Jumbo's All Beef is the best grocery store dog you can get here.

Chicago 58 does an amazing salami (!!!), but I never thought much of their hot dogs.

Out of curiosity, was a J Kwinters dog among the 6? Grew up with them, and they're my favourite hot dog anywhere on the planet.

I think they were. Plus Shopsys, Big Franks (regular and veal). The BF veal were disqualified as being too much like a sausage and not at all like a hot dog.

Kwinters became Big Franks, correct. My impression is that BF changed the recipes after. The pre-BF Kwinters knucker was wonderful. I used to stop often if I was near Dufferin & Finch. I also liked buying from Jack's nephew when he had the place in the Promenade, but he didn't carry the knucker, IIRC.

One of my guilty pleasures is to get a Shopsy's hot dog with cheese and bacon from the Woodbine & Steelcase location. They use lots of real cheddar and melt it under the broiler.

That sounds really good. I've seen that location and have thought about stopping but never have. I think I'll make a point of it now.

Now that you have all discussed the bestvdogs etc......lets go back to the original question.........where can i get my Chicago 58 fix?

I got those I used at a little boutique grocery store on Eglinton just east of the Allen. I'm not sure what it's called. If I figure it out I'll post it. If someone hasn't already come up with it by then.

Pretty sure that's it. There's a truck in the way on Google street view so it's hard to tell. But that looks like the right location.
