Pizza Stones [moved from Prairie Provinces]

Just tried to make pizza using Jim Laheys new book "My Pizza". The oven has to be preheated for 30 minutes at 500 then the broiler is put on for 10 minutes. Needless to say, this makes the oven extremely hot!! When I went to put the pizza on top of the preheated pizza stone, it had broken in half. I need to get a pizza stone that will withstand such high temperatures. Any suggestions?

This is the Pizza stone that I use on my smoker grill.I can get my grill up to 800 degrees.

They are used in kilns so they are good to 2150 degrees.

    $33 including shipping.

    It wont crack.

I had a pizza stone that broke in half but since it just sat on the bottom shelf of my oven that was just fine--it still "worked."

You could try out a Lodge cast iron pizza pan. Heat it on high on the stove first, put the pizza on, then put the whole thing under the broiler. I find it works much better for Neapolitan style pizza than the stone and oven at max method.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been doing a little research and it looks like a great alternative!

Most of them should handle those temperatures since they are made of ceramic or a clay type material. I have heard of problems arising if they get any water or dish soap in them as the liquids boil very quickly as the stone heats up and this can cause cracking. Apparently you're not supposed to wash them, just scrape/brush down the top.

The pizza stone that I was using had never been put in water. I think that I need to get a thicker one - 1/2 to 3/4 inch maybe
