best restaurants for a small wedding celebration in new england?

I'm looking for a really nice restaurant in an inn or on a farm about an hour outside NYC (or possibly about an hour from Exeter, NH). Something in a really pretty setting, maybe on the water somewhere or in a converted barn...we might go to Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Westchester but looking for some other options too. Thanks so much!

  1. We had our reception at The Stonehenge Inn in Ridgefield CT in 2004. I don't know what you mean by small but we had 110 people. We had the ceremony outdoors, cocktail reception on the patio and two adjoining rooms for the reception. The main building is surrounded by small buildings with guest rooms and a pond. Autumn was perfection in that setting. The food was terrific - guests had a choice of rack of lamb, chicken duxel and halibut. The service is impeccable. Some say it is stodgy and dated but I was pleased and so were the guests. There is one person that handles weddings - the manager- his name is Doug Seville and he is very accomodating and patient and spends time on the details.

Thanks!! I should have clarified! It would just be a lunch or dinner for 8-10 people but we were looking for a really beautiful place to do it!

    2. How about The White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport. Real close to the water. A converted barn. Very pretty setting. 1 hour from Exeter.

      1. The Bedford Village Inn in Bedford, NH is fantastic. 30 min from Exeter. Converted barn with plenty of event space.

I second this venue, It is a very nice cozy yet elegant Inn.

        2. If you are looking for water views, you might want to consider the Castle Hill Inn in Newport RI: It's a Relais & Chateaux property.

          1. Crabtree's Kittle House in Chappaqua, Westchester
