Frank El soul food returns (Tampa/USF)
After several years absence, Frank El soup food has returned with its southern style buffet for $8. Yesterday, the buffet included fried pork chops, baked chicken, and some great chicken and dumplings, with great sides of cornbread dressing, collards, sweet potatoes, black eyed peas, plantains, peas and rice, mac n cheese and so on. Had a slice of cake, too, pineapple cake with orange frosting--- and it was great, and i'm not a big cake fan.
Some of the best (only?) home style cooking places around USF, and the oblivious students will never know.
It is on Fletcher in the same strip as Chopstix, Lee's food store, etc.

I finally got in here to try it for lunch today. Great food for only $8. Pot roast and mashed potatoes, baked chicken, curried chicken, greens, cornbread, sweet potatoes, plaintains, mac and cheese and other things I'm surely forgetting. The owner was very nice, going around to all the tables to make sure everyone was happy. Thanks for a great recommendation. Now if you'll excuse me I'm about to go food comatose somewhere after that feast.

Thanks, Andy! I don't get up to that part of town much anymore, used to work at USF..anyway we went tonight and it was awesome! We had the buffet with fried porkchops, turkey, collards, black eyed peas, mac/cheese. Hubby said the yams and plantains were great. Glad to know it's there, I have longed for my Alabama food and now I know where to find it.

Thanks, I'm always looking for good places to try in the USF area. This looks like lunch later this week. Here's the link to their website for anyone interested:
