The perfect jelly donut. t

For years my husband has been looking for the jelly donut of his youth. Must have raspberry jelly and granulated sugar(only) on outside. Of course must me a great doughnut too. We found one at Peter Pan bakery in Greenpoint Bklyn and ZAbars does one around Hannukah.

I wonder if the bombolini at Falai on Lafayette wouldn't fit the bill. I thought I remembered there being a sugar covered version.

Polish/Ukranian markets carry a jelly donut year round, and there are some in the East Village.
With these, they make variations close to what you want, but there are also powdered sugar, and no sugar versions, and they switch up. The jelly filling will probably be very close if not exact.

Which East Village markets do you recommend for donuts?

After starting this search I think we've found what we're looking for. It's called the 7th Avenue Donut Shop and Diner on 7th Ave in Park Slope in Brooklyn. Open 24 hours My husband says they're just what he remembers. We'll try to get to Orwashers.

What about Orwasher's on the UES? I think you have to get there early to snag them, but apparently they are made to order, and that looks an awful lot like granulated sugar on top: http://www.ediblemanhattan.com/topics...

I've been searching in vain for those wonderful jelly doughnuts...you used to be able to find them at any neighborhood bakery. But now both bakeries and doughnuts are gone...I hope someone can come up with a few more possibilities.

When I was a kid we used to get donuts like that. They were called Bismarks and they were delicious. My dad was a salesman and he used to bring them home from a bakery in New Jersey when he was working there. Nothing like it here in Florida.

There is a small bakery, Junda's< on the North Fork of LI in Jamesport where they make their own raspberry filling for their donuts. Sooooooooooo good!!

The bakery on Grand St near Clinton has good jelly donuts. Otherwise , since you mention BKlyn, try the bakeries along 15th Ave in Boro Park.
