Indian food/ east bay

Suggestion wanted for an Indian restaurant in the Berkeley/Oakland area. Could be veggie or not, emphasis on quality of food. Price point of $30/ person or less.

Thanks in advance for your help

$30? Lol...I just discovered a great little place today on San Pablo just south of San Pablo Dam Road called Delhi Dhaba and Chaat. It's in a busy corner strip mall and attached to an exotic Indian grocery store that shold be incorporated into the experience, it's got lots of strange and wonderful things. Looks very unpromising on the outside, but the food was outstanding. We ordered veggie samosas, mysore masala dosa, fish curry, garlic naan and two kinds of lassi, one salted and one mango -- both excellent. The condiments included the usual yogurt and dal, but there were three others that I stupidly didn't catch the names of that were unusual and delicious. Everything was perfect, or very close. The samosas were the best I've had in years, with flaky crust and a gorgeous savory filling. The complex spice flavors in each dish had exactly the right heat -- definitely there, but never over the top. I was a bit surprised to see two different dosas on the menu, since the other food seems North Indian (not that I'm an expert). But the one we ordered was scrumptious, a nice big rice crepe with a chili-potato-curry filling. The naan was both fluffy and crisp as well as flavorful. An additional attraction for many will be the large screen TV playing silly Bollywood music videos -- fun! Very nice, friendly and helpful owners who were delighted we had found them, and promised to knock our socks off -- which they did. Very highly recommended!

We also ordered lamb curry to go to bring over to another friend. He loved it. The total bill: $36. This may only be a very, very good Indian restaurant, but it's certainly an incredible bargain.

With my recent discovery of Hamro Aangan in Albany, equally good (momos, yum!) and cheap, and very different from Delhi Dhaba, I'm in Indian hog heaven.

Mmm, sounds really good! I found the website, www.delhidhaba.net

Fantastic -- didn't realize they had a site. But...it needs help. There's nothing there.

You won't be disappointed -- this place is for real. Just yummy...I savored every single bite, and remember it fondly even now, many hours later...and want more. BTW, they have a steam table, which I didn't sample, since it is what it is. But I have to say that the steam table food looked and smelled fabulous, as they opened it up just when we arrived. And they have a $5.99 steam table lunch which, if you are (for example) a poor senior or student who loves Indian food, is a blessing that will leave you full and happy. Despite the location, this really is much better Indian food than I've encountered generally. I was thrilled by such wonderful flavors. As I said, I'm no expert.

How do you define "quality of food"? Ajanta is pickier about their suppliers than most other Indian places.

None of the Indian / Pakistani restaurants hereabouts cost $30, you could eat anywhere. Ajanta's probably the most expensive and upscale (not that it's terribly fancy).

Ajanta. They have a tasting menu option that's a nice way to try a bunch of things - I think $26 per person, $23 for a vegetarian version. But everyone at the table needs to get it.

Indus Village for a more inexpensive option.
