Looking for a location in or south of Boston for a 50th birthday party for my husband this July/August
I would like to throw a fun, relaxed party for my husband's 50th birthday this summer. Depending on the venue, it would either be a dinner party for around 20 or a cocktail party for 50-75. We live on the South Shore, and most of the guests live either on the South Shore or west of Boston, so either Boston or south of Boston would work. A private room and easy parking are a must.
Ideally, I am looking for a place that is kind of upscale without being pretentious, with good food and drinks, that won't totally break the bank (too much to ask?). Any suggestions? I am completely out-of-touch with the Boston Area restaurant scene. Thanks!
Two places that come to mind, although not extremely "chowish", but do a very respectable job on private functions. Alba in Quincy Center now has a dry aged steak program and does a great job with small functions (private rooms available). Very good wine list and bar service. Easy parking. Scarlett Oak Tavern in South Hingham (Queen Anne's Corner), has good service, private room, good bar service and a respectable menu. Spacious parking on property. Both places present well, and will make your guests happy they attended. Have fun!
There are a few places downtown you might consider (Marliave, Eastern Standard, The Terrace at Avenue One), but parking and a private room are both pretty tough to come by. If you do in-Boston, look for places with parking garages nearby, I think that's the only way to accommodate that many people in the city. So that limits you to Kendall/Back Bay/the Waterfront, for the most part. Here's a short list of places that come to mind in those areas:
- Blue Room (Kendall)
- EVOO (Kendall)
- Sonsie (Back Bay)
- Sel de la Terre (Back Bay)
- Legal Harborside (Waterfront)
- The Daily Catch (Waterfront)
Hope that helps!
Not particularly chowish, but the Inn at Bay Pointe in Quincy would be ok for either. They have outdoor seating, and a glassed wall room overlooking the water. I'm not sure if they have private rooms. What about Black Rock Country Club in Hingham? I've been to a number of functions there, college grad parties, Bar Mitzvahs. It can be v. hot on the deck, but they do have spacious private indoor space, overlooking the golf course. The food was very good, particularly the lamb chops.
