Locanda del Lago "Morso della Bestia" (Bite of the Beast!)
The best in question here is rabbit. And the idea - something I find farily common in better restaurants in europe where you take the many meats and offal of an animal and make a meal out of it. I had a memorable meal in Northerin Italy at the Miramonti Restaurant in Concesio (** Michelin) and had a lamb offering - all parts of the lamp, sweetbreads, liver, etc. all the meats prepared simply, but differnt, and all on one plate. Fun. And no baaaaaad! Not baaaaaad at all!
But I digress and this is about Lago - this restaurant seems to change over the years. I've had some GREAT Italian food here, and I've had some good Italian food here. Never anything that kept me from going back, but rarely things that made me crazy to insist on going there what the crazy crave think pops into your head, grabs hold and starts playing with the controls and you're suck.
They have a Feel like they're not sure what they want it to be. Tourist haven? Family place? Biz lunch place. Whatever, the meal tonight was terrific from head to toe. ( But without offerings from the head or the toe. )
Antipasto was roast rabbit Loin with Market Baby Frisée and Kalamata Olive Sauce. A salad. Satisfying and differnt. Rabbit cooked perfectly.
Zucchini Flowers, Rabbit Shoulder and rabbit Belly Risotto . Oh yum. this might have been my favorite, but then I'm weak when it comes to a great risotto. Maybe I should take pics next time.
And then another past - this was, Rabbit liver and Garde Peas, in a housemade Spinach Tagliolini . This was unusual and satisfying. Felt like I was in Tuscany , especially when the charming Itallian (charming/italian is that a redundancy?) owner is nearby speaking his native tongue.
Ffinally, roasted rabbit leg infused with rosemary and wrapped in pancette, with braised red and gold peppers on a bed of creamy risotto.and heirloom tomatoes. What's not to like? How you could screw them up? They didnn't and it was delicious and comforting.
The dessert Dolce Chocolate Cake, Sour Amarene Cherries, Whipped Cream of which one bite was quite good, but really, I don't eat it to maintain the lie that I'm watching my weight. Okay, maybe I didn't gain an extra oz or two by forgoing the sweets.
All this fun was a mere #48/per person - and that included, I repeat INCLUDED house wines.
Will let you know when I hear of their next special.
