Great tempura in Richmond Hill?

I will be meeting a friend around in Richmond Hill later today, and she's a big fan of Japanese food, especially tempura. I've seen a few Japanese restaurants recommended in RH for their sushi, but can anyone please recommend a restaurant in the area that has great tempura?

  1. I may be too late, but Kaori (Yonge & Hwy 7 / HiTech Rd) has great tempura, along with very good sashimi, sushi and korean treats, especially dolsot bibimbap and kalbi.
    The building used to be Outback, and it's got the tatami rooms if you like that vibe, or regular tables and/or seats at the sushi bar :-)
    Maybe a tiny bit pricey, compared to the mom-and-pop sushi-korean places, but we like the food a lot..

      Thanks for this suggestion. I've noticed this restaurant on the way to the movie theater and we'll be sure to try it next time.

    2. I love Inaho near beaver creek/7. Small place runned by husband and wife.

      2. To the other two chowfriend posters. Sorry! I beg to differ!

        IMHO, there is NO 'Great' tempura in Toronto, let alone in Richmond Hill. One can go to Inatei, Miyabi, Inaho, Akasaka, Senbazuru, Ichiban...etc and get similar, relatively mediocre products! If one is lucky and 'early' ( when the oil is fresh), the batter might be less thick and dense and the product less greasy. If the establishment is busy, prepare to get thickly battered and insufficiently drained greasy products!

        To play safe, I would suggest sticking to reputable Japanese own and operated establishments like Solo Sushi Ya or Aoyama ( though both are not in Richmond Hill )

        { It takes great skill to make GREAT tempuras. Not just using the right mix of sesame and vegetable oil and correct batter mix but the right temperature ( thermometer used ) and precise timing. When Bontan prawns are used for example, even the way the prawns are straightened out have to be adhered to a certain guideline ( hand broken instead of using knife etc ). I recall one of the best tempura place in Tokyo. The chef owner ( with 30+ years tempura making experience ) actually held his breath and stopped talking for 15 seconds when he was frying the prawns so that unnecessary moisture or air flow might not disturb the final product! That's how 'crazy' it can get! }

        But man!! Was it gooood!!

          People who follow CHOW will know that I generally agree with Charles on most posts, and I often rely on his recommendations when I want to explore new authentic chinese dining options beyond my own sometimes obsessive explorations. :-)

          BUT, most of us when asking for recommendations are not seeking "technically percfect and identical to some standard that most have never even tried" but rather looking for "delicious, and your local favorite", If your personal fave drastically differs from what one would normally expect, then one should share that info, too, of course.

          In this case, I'll agree that "great" and even "good" are all relative, and I'll agree that I wouldn't be caught dead in the Ichiban's of the world, but I'll stand by my assertion that Kaori makes very good tempura that I personally have liked as much as any I've had, including some of the very expensive and highly touted faves in T.O.

          And regarding the Japanese-only caveat - technically, tempura is a Portuguese dish, and the Japanese just imported the idea since their emperor loved it, but I enjoy it when made by Japanese chefs, AND by other talented chefs, as opposed to only by the traditional and correct Portuguese chefs :-)

            Thanks for helping to clarify my two cents worth. I'm here to furnish suggestions and in some cases 'hoping to educate in a humble way'! Of course I'm not trying to compare TO's Japanese food with those of Japan's. However, when I see words like 'Great' being used, I think I need to step in with a 'warning'?!!
            I'll be watching Avengers in Richmond Hill Silvercity this weekend, may be I'll give your recommendation ' Kaori' a try! Is it Chinese, Korean or Japanese operated?!

              Stay till the end of the credits and you may change your mind about what you want to eat. Or not.

              Yes, that's exactly what I was referring to and I again, I appreciate your recommendation. Actually, I prefer my tempura served as tendon, and there are different ways to prepare this dish, so personal tastes are relevant and sometimes, there is no "absolute" in any particular rendition.

                I've had great tempura in Tokyo, in a little back alley place dedicated to that dish only (and well known to locals), and it was fabulous, so I'm familiar with truly "great" tempura and how its made. Perhaps, I shouldn't have used "great" as an adjective, but I've had some very good tempura in Toronto, but I'm not familiar with the Japanese restaurants in the RH area. Thanks for the suggestions though.
