Question about topics/threads
Earlier today I wrote a post on what I thought was an innocuous thread about kitchen terms that people find annoying. Just now I went looking for it and it has disappeared. I found it in my history and that went to a page basically saying it has been move, removed, or believe it or not, it never existed. Does anybody know anything about this? I have seen threads locked in the past of things got a bit contentious on the thread but that did not seem to be happening in this case.
Pet peeve threads don't tend to go that well here, and we've had quite a lot of them over the years. Starting a new one doesn't end up adding anything -- people just rehash the same ground that was covered in previous posts. We do ask that people avoid starting threads simply to have something to talk about, and while we don't remove all threads in that vein, if we're getting a lot of them, or the same person is starting a great many of them, we will start to remove them.
re: The Chowhound Team
Could you at least let us know what is going on? Lock the thread for a couple of days with your explanation on the bottom and then delete it. Don't just leave us hanging and wondering what is going on. I have not participated in a thread like that before. There have been instances on other threads where the same kind of posts pop up occasionally, but that's it.
I imagine it's because there have already been many threads about very similar topics: mispronounced, mistranslated, overused, misused, or unnecessary words, or just anything vaguely language- and food-related that anyone finds annoying for any reason. Most of these threads are still open for contributions.
"Food Terminology that makes you CRAZY!!" (405 replies and locked
"We're adults, aren't we??" (416 replies and locked
"It's MASCARPONE!" (333 replies and still open for business
"What The Heck Is Up With All This "Chipolte" BS?????" (112 replies and counting
"Why are main courses called entrées in the US?" (135 replies so far
""Melty" Cheese" (only 18 replies, get on the ball people!
"Words that Annoy You in Restaurant Reviews" (347 replies, fuggedaboudit
"Cringe-worthy words in restaurant reviews" (180 replies already, so see the next one
"Most overused phrases... [in food reviews]" (only 17 replies, a great opportunity to have your voice heard!)
You missed the one(s) about 'food trends you are tired of' :)
I happened to have a tab (on another computer) left over from yesterday morning when the thread started. It didn't have any real content from the start. It was just an open invite to talk about anything that annoys you. The OP's example was something an old boss used to say, but all the old chestnuts started to appear (sammies?), including words and concepts that other Chowhounds regularly use.
I suspect the moderators realized that this was a thread they'd have to police constantly, and decided to nip it in the bud. And there wasn't any content worth saving with a lock.
