Sheep's milk products in CT

I'm looking for a place in CT (preferably no more than an hour from Waterbury, less than an hour though I'd hope) where I can get sheep's milk products. I've been told to cut out cow's milk dairy, but that I can have goat and sheep milk. I'm no cheese snob, I like the basics. Provolone, cheddar, ricotta, cream cheese, mozzarella, parmesan and asiago are my typical cheeses.

I've been told that Pecorino Romano is good; I have a chunk to grate up and try. I'd really like to get versions of ricotta and provolone and cream cheese, though. Something where you'd not really know it's different....not where it's sorta similar and it leaves you thinking "what WAS that?"

Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem. They make cheese and yogurt from sheep on their farm. Limited supply call ahead. Try Town Plot IGA on Fairfield Avenue in Waterbury

I agree with the recommendations for a good cheese shop. Also, if you are in the neighborhood of a Whole Foods, they have lots of different sheep's milk cheeses, goat milk, goat milk yogurt, etc.

Any good cheese shop should have oodles of sheep or goat cheese for you to try--even the better supermarkets usually have a few in their deli sections. Fromage in Old Saybrook, The Cheese Shop in Centerbrook and Caseus in New Haven are all excellent, but a little over an hour from you.
Liuzzi and Bon Appetit in Hamden are a little closer, but I haven't been to either in quite a while. Curds & Whey in Haddam (just moved-be sure to get new address) might be a little closer.

Some great sheep cheeses you may want to try are Fiore di sardo (Pecorino sardo-Italy), Manchego(Spain), Petit Basque(France), Vermont Shepherd (Putney Vermont), Moliterno al Tartufo (Sheep&Goat truffle-Italy), and Ewe's Blue (Old Chatham NY).

Recommended Goat cheeses are Goat Gouda (Beemster, Holland), La Yerbera (spain), Brunet (Italy), Goat Ricotta Salata Tenerina (Sicily), Lebanon Goat Cheese with chives (Lebanon CT), Tomme de Grand Mere (France), and my favorite: Humbolt Fog (CA).

Be careful to check with the proprietor, many cheeses advertised mainly as sheep or goat have some cow milk mixed in.

There are a few vendors with sheep's milk products at the New Haven Farmer's markets. There is one in Wooster Square every Saturday and one in Edgewood Park (corner of West Rock & Whalley) 10-2:00 on Sunday. There was sheep milk cheddar and other soft cheeses. Go to Cityseed.org for more details. Also Liuzzi Cheese on State St North Haven may be an option. I do not know the Waterbury area so that is as close as I can get you. Good luck.
