Shave ice on the Malibu Pier

Not willing to fight the horrific traffic or be housebound on such a beautiful day, we walked over to the Malibu Pier this afternoon fully resigned to the fact that we were going to overpay for mediocre food with a great view. What we found instead was the best shave ice we have encountered in many years. There was a stand right on the pier that bested most I've had on the islands. In California I always get either good ice or good syrups but this was perfect ice and great syrups; they even had the li hing powder!!! My daughter made the very predictable (for a seven year old) choice of blue raspberry, I chose the house-made rose water, lychee and lime ( it was sublime ). They offered the standard choices plus 3 or 4 small batch, organic syrups and offered samples of the unexpected favors. Added bonus was as we were ordering, Adam Sandler and his family were in line behind us. What a doll he was as he spent ten mins. discussing ice texture and flavor choices with my girls. I am always on the quest for great shave ice and this one was defiantly in the top 3. Not sure if the stand had a name but it was the only one on the pier.

I too am a shave ice lover. I just got back from Oahu enjoying the finest of their shave ice, notably Shimazu Store, Ailana and Jung's.

What are your favorites, both here and Hawaii?

I don't make it out to Malibu Pier, but this is another reason (Grom is the other) to drive out there.

Have you walked over to Grom http://www.grom.it/eng/index.php in Cross Creek yet? If not it ought to be your next stop for anyone seeking gelato of the highest order in the L.A. area.

Yes, spent plenty of time at Grom. Fig sorbet is my choice.

As the weather is getting warmer, here is a reminder that a few years ago, Diddy Riese in Westwood Village added shave ice (when they discontinued the hot dogs). Last I saw, it cost a buck for three flavors w/o ice cream, $1.50 with a scoop. They have about a dozen flavors of syrups, all from the familiar-looking bottles. A very good-sized refreshing serving for the price.

Actually, now that I think about those lines lately, forget the above.
