Great Middle Eastern spinach and potato pies?

Years ago there was a bakery on Atlantic Avenue called Near East Bakery--it was literally underground, under the sidewalk--that made the greatest spinach and potato pies (the handheld type) in the world. They are long gone and I have not found equal or better pies anywhere--any ideas??

Holy mackerel--I went there with my dad, who was living on Henry St. at the time. Must have been '74 or '75. I've mentioned getting Middle Eastern pies from an underground bakery, and since no one ever knows what I'm talking about, I started to think I'd made up the memory.

BTW, Near East Bakery is in theory returning, although very slowly. http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archiv...

Renovations seem to be happening sporadically and the sign has since removed, although I did see a bunch of bags of flour making their way to the basement a month or so ago.

I haven't had spinach and potato pies, but I really like the spinach fatayer at Damascus Bakery. The combination of tomato and a touch of pomegranate molasses gives them a delicious, slightly sour tang.
