Memorial weekend in & around Mendocino

1wino May 24, 2012 02:02 PM

Heading to Mendocino/Fort Bragg for Memorial Day weekend & seeking restaurant recommendations, esp. Sat. and Sun. night and a place to pick up a picnic lunch to take on a hike on Sunday. Any up-to-date info is appreciated.

I get the impression Cafe Beaujolais and Little River Inn are favorites, but have read a few horror stories about the service at Beaujolais. Besides those ...? For lunch, I seek sandwiches with fresh bread and no slimy packaged lunchmeat. For dinner, we aren't looking for "special occasion" or fancy, and we're open to all types of cuisine, but we do prefer local ingredients and we don't mind paying for quality. Someplace casual and fun with a lively bar and nice wine list would do the trick. Thanks!

I don't mean to be discouraging, but it's hard to find memorable food in the area. I do like the Little River Inn, somewhat pricey, but they use quality ingredients, if its a local bottle they sometimes don't charge corkage (or at least they didn't, don't quote me on that =P), and it's very satisfying food.

The one bright spot in my Mendocino experience (lived there a month) was the Ft Bragg bakery. Great breads, bright and attractive place to eat. Really superlative for the area. They would more than fit your bill for good sandwiches, and maybe more. Don't know if it's still open.
