Sacramento - Downtown?

I will be in Sacramento on Sunday and I am looking for recommendations for lunch and dinner. I am looking for casual and not too expensive and within easy walking distance of the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza.

If the brew pubs near the hotel have good beer and appetizers, especially wings, that would work for lunch. Are there any Mexican restaurants near the hotel that are open for dinner on Sunday or any Sacramento specialties that I should make an effort to try?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    1. I can recommend the 4th Street Grill at the corner of 4th and L Streets.....for either lunch or dinner. Have heard good things about Joe's Crab Shack in Old Sacramento but haven't tried it myself. The only brew pub I know about is in Downtown Plaza - River City Brewing Company. Have never eaten there...........would Hard Rock Cafe qualify? I doubt it.

River City Brewing Company menu is sort of yuppie nuveau American ... actually pretty good if you go for that sort of thing ... but definitely NOT a wings kind of place. Rubicon Brewery is more of a pub-grub kind of place, and the Fox & Goose (pub but not brewery) goes english-y. All are reasonably good, depending on what you like.

For Mexican, I like Tres Hermanas and Vallejos. Centro is good also, but more of a hip scene sort of place; 924 Mexican restaurant also good but more of a dive. (People will tell you to go to Ernesto's, but don't listen to them unless you like middle-america Mexican.)

All these places are w/in 1 mile of the capitol.

          • Old Sac is near there in walking distance. Hogshead is pretty good for wings and stuff. Brew pub down and dirty thing. Not Yuppieville like Pyramid or River City. If I was going to have a unique Sac experience, I would go to California Fats or Fat City. (the original Frank Fat's is kinda far for legs). beautiful restaurants and the food is pretty good. (You are not going to find really good in Old Sac, except for The Firehouse $$$$$). If it is food only the 4th St Grill is it). Another unique idea is to take the Water Taxi up the river and go have dinner at one of the places up there. It is a very unique thing to do. Sushi on the river is pretty good.

Also the De4lta King has a murder mystery every night. Their food is decent and the play is fun. Suspects mystery theater. Do let us know what you did.

              1. So..........where did you eat and what did you think?

                  1. This is a brief follow up of where I actually ended up eating.

Sunday - Dinner at River City Brewing right by the hotel. The beer was good and so was the vegetable quesadilla, but the wings were not very good. They were small and overcooked and the blue cheese dip had no chunks of blue cheese.

Monday - Lunch at Emma's Tacos on K street. I had the carnitas tacos that I thought were really good. At least they were really good compared to the mexican food in Baltimore.

Dinner was a group dinner at California Fats. There were several dishes served family style and I particularly liked the Thai Steak and the green beans. They were out of banana cream pie.

Tuesday - I only had half an hour to eat before I left for the airport so I went to the food court at the mall and had a gyro at Gyro Supreme.
