London chip shop serving plaice?

Don't give a damn about ambiance, just want superlative plaice and chips.

Almost like they were two different places! Can it be *that* inconsistent?!

It is a wildly inconsistent place! I lived nearby from 2008-2011 and it was my go-to place for when I wanted some fish & chips or we were too lazy/tired to cook.

I took my parents there when they visited London in 2010 and it was top-form. Crispy batter with butery, flaky fish. But, other times its just a big mushy pile of tasteless fish. I wish I could have deduced what it depends on but it seemed kind of random.

I do have to say, contrary to a post in one of the threads linked above, that never was the fish ready and waiting. This is over 15-20 visits over the years. I always had to wait while they prepared the fish.

I do agree it is not cheap. But with their prime location and inviting outdoor benches I doubt thats a problem for them.

I had a great fish and chips at Kerbisher and Malt in Shepherds Bush, they had plaice, as well as cod and haddock. And excellent onion rings.

My haddock there was very soft (soft and flakey, moreso than cod even) and I typically associate haddock with being on the firmer end of the FnC spectrum.

We went to Masters Superfish last night for dinner -- our first dinner in London this trip (visiting from San Francisco Bay Area)! They did have plaice on the menu. We weren't familiar with the fish so we didn't order it but now that I'm finding out about it we might have to go back and try it before we leave.
We had the cod and it was delicious fish & chips, just what we were hoping to get -- crispy batter, moist fish on inside.

Aside from Masters Superfish, Nautilus in Golders Green also has good plaice and chips.

I have it in mind that Masters Superfish has it on the menu.

That said, I may be mistaken. I'm northern so fish & chips has to be either cod or haddock. Anything else is a southern affectation so I wouldnt have read much past that part of the menu.

Lived in East Anglia back in the 1960's and had plaice and chips for dinner nearly every Friday night -- absolutely love it. (Have nothing against cod or haddock, just think plaice has more flavour.)
