Charleston breakfast and lunch fare

Jeff C. May 22, 2012 09:58 AM

Wife and I will be visiting for a few days in June and are interested in casual, innovative, fresh, non-chain breakfast and lunch fare, esp., but not limited to, nuevo southern and seafood. We are staying on James Island near the river, so recs. in West Ashley, James Island, and Folly Beach are also welcome. We have already planned return visits to Taco Boy and Bowen's Island, and first visits to Glass Onion and Jack's Cosmic Dogs. Have any new local faves emerged since last summer? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jeff,

While I love/adore Jack's, the drive out there is plagued with construction. Add some time into your travel plans. A little closer is Johnny's at Ace hardware in Mt. P. No tables, but excellent dogs.

We went to Grocery for the first time not long ago and I highly recommend it. The website says they're closed on Sunday, but we had brunch on Sunday, so call to see when they are open. 2 Boroughs Larder is open for lunch and worth the hike. There are 2 other Upper King spots that I haven't been to yet, but my friends recommend: macIntosh and Butcher and Bee.

None of these are breakfast places. Maybe somebody who's visited recently can help with that.

Glass Onion is sooo great. I look forward to your review.

We like Rita's out in Folly. Unprepossessing, beachy vibe, dog friendly, good food.

There's a burger joint over in W. Ashley call Triangle Char and Bar. Not your average bear.

Glass Onion is HIGHLY recommended. Fat Hen out on Maybank Highway is also highly regarded.

Awesome, guys. Thanks so much. Dinner reservations necessary for Glass Onion?

Can't hurt. Tuesday night is fried chicken night and you have to reserve. If they have those link sausages, get them. I dreamed about them in Germany. Germany :)

Are the traffic delays to get to Jack's at the West Ashley or Mount Pleasant location?

Got it. If the other location is just as good, we may avoid Mt. P. altogether. (Will be closer to Folly anyway.)

Any good breakfast spots along Folly Rd.?

This is easy, lots of great spots in Folly.Try the Lost Dog,Rita's and Tokyo Crepes for breakfast. For lunch hit the Wich Doctor, Drop in Gourmet, the Surf Bar and Rita's.Don't forget Pearlz in west Ashley also.

Remember, when in FB drive slow, don't park against traffic, and all four wheels off the pavement!
