  1. and...?
Are you looking for a pub atmosphere? Something upscale? How far are you willing to drive?

You're within range of all kinds of places...
    Sabor Peru in Rutherford (BYO)
Fiesta Hut in E. Rutherford (don't let the name throw you--v good Mexican food)
Spuntino in Clifton (full bar, Italian tapas)

Steve's Steakhouse on Rt. 17S. 5 minute drive. I always get the filet. Ask for extra sauce and rye bread.

these sugg are great thanks....want to stay close as I dont know area at all...1-2 rd away

      2. Redds (http://www.reddsrestaurant.com/) 317 Washington Ave in Carlestadt is a block away from the Izod Center. It's a good restaurant and pub, and also has catering and banquet rooms upstairs. Good pub type food.

I always balked at Redd's because they had mandatory valet parking. Not sure if that's still the case, but it's not a place that should have valet parking at all, let alone exclusively. Also nearby is The Grasshopper which was recently featured (for good reason) on Kitchen Nightmares. I don't know if they've gotten better as a result. For Italian, try Gianna's or Bazzarelli. They are a mile or so up the street and you won't get lost going there.

        2. Too bad Caughey's closed (a long time ago), but in the same area across Rt. 17 is Al Di La...mixed reviews but it was good when I was there.

Caughey's......was that the place that used to give you the free fried mushrooms as an appetizer?

            1. re: fourunder

Yes, on a platter in their lobby/foyer. Along with the foul-mouthed myna bird in the cage. I loved that place.

          2. Well on RT 17 S [carlstadt] across from Lowes store is a Great Buffet, called Flaming Grill,Place does get crowded at times due to their big selection of foods and deserts,so much to choose from, nicely decorated,8 food stations, also a hibachi grilling station,Best buffet in this area.

Thanks For The Info ! scratch them off the list of go to places.

            1. Park and Orchard...well known, well liked, etc. I've always enjoyed going there. Can get crowded, a tad loud, etc. but still a popular spot. Good food, extensive menu and wine list. I haven't been in a few years unfortunately.

Steve's is good. Not a real hard-core steakhouse kind of place, but they focus on steak and they are better than most in the area.

Ugh. I reaaaaaally have to disagree with you about P&O. I stopped going there years ago b/c it was just...tired. And on more than one occasion, the wines or liqueurs we wanted to order from their 'fabulous' list were inexplicably MIA. There are SO many good restaurants in NNJ--I just can't give them my dollars.

                1. re: Curlz

Really. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but prior to that I went regularly and I had seen no change -- food, service, etc. Now, I didn't regularly order wine there, but years ago they were well known for their wine list. Perhaps that's changed. As a matter of fact, more often than not I usually had a drink and not wine.

I do know in the mid-90's they started to change the menu a bit, in phases. I could see the menu getting "stale" or tired, but it's so extensive there was always something "good" for me to order. I don't know to what extent they changed everything, something, etc. -- but they did start to update things in phases.

I'd like to get back there soon to see what it's like.

                  Thanks for the comments.

That's what I mean about it being tired. If you go I'd love to hear if something has changed drastically for the better!

              2. I am not sure if you went to the concert yet but on the same road that runs right between the arena and the stadium less than a mile down is Gianna's Italian Restaurant (Family Style).
About a mile down on the same road is Segovia's. It is very good Spanish food.

+1 for Segovia's. And I believe they opened up a steakhouse just down the road from the original. Their garlic shrimp; is to die for.

                2. It would only eat up a few minutes.. but you could stop by Rutt's Hut for an appetizer :-P
