Good Fresh Seafood in OBX?
We are heading down to OBX next weekend from Toronto, and craving fresh, local seafood. Looking for restaurant suggestions as well as stores where we can buy fresh seafood in season. We'll be based in Hatteras but are willing to drive anywhere in the area. Thanks!
Just got back from a week on Ocracoke, and finding (and enjoying!) fresh seafood won't be a problem for you. We had fabulous meals at the following: Cafe Atlantic, The Flying Melon, The Back Porch and Dajio. There is a non-descript seafood market right on the bay (Silver Lake) where you can buy just about anything fresh -- I'm sorry that I can't remember its name, despite walking past it several times per day. :>o They have a sign outside listing what is available.
If you have the opportunity, do try the sheepshead fish. Flaky, sweet white fish that I had crusted with pecans at The Flying Melon, and which I will dream about for a long time to come. Really, we found it hard to go wrong with any of the seafood while we were there.
We also had lunch at a non-descript little place in Rodanthe/Waves called Atlantic Coast Cafe. The food was simple and delicious (grilled shrimp salad for me, grilled mahi mahi sandwich for my other half), and there was a nice selection of beers as well. For a great selection of beers, do check out Howard's on Ocracoke; the food was nothing to get overly excited about IMO (decent, standard pub fare), but the beer list was impressive.
Sheepshead! This is one of my favorites. It is so buttery in flavor and firm enough that I add the leftovers to chowder.
Some of the seafood markets don't carry the lesser known fish when they are crazy busy in the summer. One market owner told me it just takes too much time to give descriptions every few minutes and then the tourist ends up just buying flounder, etc. since it is familiar.
The fish market you mentioned, a co-op iirc, sometimes has a very excellent fig cake sold by the slice!
Are you willing to drive down to Ocracoke? If so, Howard's is one of my favorite restaurant. Nothing better than sitting out on the porch in an Adirondack chair eating dinner. They have a good variety of well prepared seafood- we go every time we go to the Outer Banks (10ish visits at this point?) and it never disappoints.
You'll want to check out Hatteras House Seafood. Family owned with a beautiful seafood counter of local catch from their own boat. Prepared items too. Here's my post from last year, please update us.
