Multi Tiered Cake

For my teacher's retirement party I really wanted to make a multitiered cake, but her favorite type of cake is a very light sponge cake, like a castella...not too sweet and not heavy. I'm assuming it would be way too light to be able to hold up multiple layers though. Would it be enough if I used dowels and cardboard circles between the layers?? Or would it not even be possible???
Thanks so much!

Absolutely you can do a multiple-layer cake with the cardboard and dowel support. No problem.

The dowels and pillars hold the weight. You can do it. You could also just make the top layer a sponge cake and the lower levels a different kind of cake.
