Francis Mallman 1884, Mendoza review - Beautiful restaurant but average meal
First off, you need a driver and a reservation for this place - it is pretty difficult to find and once there you have to be let in by the staff which lends to the overall exclusive feel. We were led to a central courtyard for a pre-dinner drink which was really lovely - you could see the chefs cooking all the meat outdoors on a traditional outdoor grill. After our drinks we opted to have dinner indoors. I can't stress enough how lovely this place is but sadly for me the food did not live up to all the hype. As it often the case with places like this, one tends to expect too much. Don't get me wrong this was not a bad meal by any standard, in fact my roasted pumpkin appetizer was one the best I've had but my main of baby goat was a disappointment - very little meat and a bit tough, the one I had a Terruno was far superior.
I would still recommend this restaurant to those visiting Mendoza - it's a great place to say you've visited once. The atmosphere and the overall pace of the dinner made for a very enjoyable evening.
This is the problem with having high expectations for a meal and something I struggle with, too. I'm visiting Mendoza in December and this is definitely on my list. how far of a drive was it from Mendoza? Trying to debate if the meal is worth the hassle and cost of finding a driver to get us there.
We were staying at Lares de Chacras hotel and it was maybe a 15 minute drive - can't imagine it would be much longer from Mendoza. The resto is worth a visit but don't expect the food to blow you away - as I say I would recommend Terruno over this place for the food if you could only choose one.
In terms of finding a driver, I would reco you contact Mendoza Holidays to arrange - they are amazing and can help you out. Our driver Ernesto was great and you could probably ask for him by name
