Dinner NearSecond City

We are taking our 20 - something son and his girlfriend to an 8:00 p.m. week night show at Second City. We would like a nice place (mid price Chi., entrees in the $20's or so) within walking distance. Cuisine is open. Hopefully with a decibel level conducive to conversation for the parents. Thoughts?

Old Town Social is getting great buzz, although it's possible that also describes their noise level, I'm not sure. Adobo Grill won't get a lot of mention on these boards, and tourists mostly mention Bayless joints for Mexican, but I have enjoyed every meal I have had there. Get the tableside guacamole--many other spots do it now, but Adobo seemingly introduced the concept to Chicago years ago. Bistro Margot is another good option, if you like traditional bistro fare. They once delivered a perfect medium-rare duck breast to my door (via CEOdeliveries.com) and it was one of those moments that reminded me how happy I am that I moved to Chicago. If you have time for a walk before the show, head south (towards the tall buildings downtown) from Second City on Wells Street, walk through Old Town Aquarium (their saltwater species are impressive and it's free to look), buy a few items at the Fudge Pot, and if you like to cook at all, go to the Spice House (they have a wide variety of freshly ground spices and seasonings set up with old-school apothecary jars and scales). Enjoy!

Bistrot Margot has a prix fixe menu available Monday - Thursday from 4pm - 6pm for $19.95, I think there are 3 selections each for app/salad, entree and dessert. You just need to be seated before 6pm. On Wednesdays they have a $26.95 prix fixe all day where you pick any app/salad/soup, entree and dessert from the regular menu. You also might want to consider Dinotto, Topo Gigio and Trattoria Roma for mid priced Italian.

Thanks so much. Bistro Margot sounds perfect for the parents. However, if the youngsters prefer Italian, do you have a preference among the 3 you mentioned? Food is priority 1, but if equal, noise level is number 2.

We've only been to Topo Gigio a few times. Food is good but I remember it as being a little on the noisy side but I'm sure it's less so on week nights. I like the food at Dinotto and they have a really nice patio area for outdoor dining when the weather cooperates. Trattoria Roma also has very good food, I like to get one of their thin crust pizzas when I go there. Their outdoor seating area is on the sidewalk, so not as private as Dinotto's. I don't think noise level will be a problem at any of them on a week night.
