I just moved from SF to a suburb of San Diego. Who are the local food reviewers? What days of the week do the food reviews get published? Besides the Union Tribune, what other publications have food reviews? Whose opinions do chowhounds respect and who is not worth reading?

So far I've ready one review by Marcia Manna of the Tribune and a few by David White in the Coast news. Marcia and David reviewed the same restauarant where I ate. Based on one review, Marcia seems like a dim bulb. She didn't do her homework and I learned a lot more about the restaurant from David's review.

So what's the skinny on your food reviewers? Am I just not finding them in the Friday and Sunday version of the Tribune?

The U/T food section (such as it is) publishes on Wednesday. In the Thursday Day/Night section (the not so equivalent to the Chron Sunday Pink Pages) has the weekly resto review. So far, Maria Hunt has been the most consistent. She's pretty game about trying some of the smaller, hole in the wall type of places. Also in Thursday's Metro (Local) section of the U/T is a column by Wolfgang that has short plugs for different restaurants, some he's right on about, others it's just a shamless plug. The section also has lots of ads. The U/T reviews tend to be bland and not very interesting, exciting or cutting edge.

The Reader is probably your best bet. Naomi's reviews aren't exactly on target (don't get e.d started on her), but the "Tin Fork" reviews are pretty good. Also the Reader's web site has copious restaurant listings, some with thumbnail reviews.

"tin fork" in the Reader is worthy of mention and of reading...a refreshing food tale in the midst of a sea of words...?

Doesn't Eleanor Widmer run reviews in the Reader from time to time, as well? I used to enjoy reading her reviews...I know she puts a restaurant guide out every year.

Ed Bedford's "Tin Fork" is probably my favorite, though...he seems to be able to find the most interesting, low-budget eats around.

I don't review restaurants Stanley, but thanks for sharing. The job of critiquing restaurants is done, in my opinion exceedingly well, by our restaurant critics Maria Hunt and Leslie James. You can determine the difference by reading the headline above the story. I do occasionally write food-related stories, such as Food Finds. That section tells our readers about new restaurants of note in the area, but no critiques are offered. Thanks for reading the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Without meaning any criticism, I must say that Marcia's post reminds me of one of my favorite old comic strips (also quoted by Ted Leitner):
The image shows a slick-looking executive at his desk talking on the phone with the caption:
"I know it's been six months, but the point is, I AM returning your call." ;-)
