The Apple Pushers - documentary
This is airing on PBS World this week - I missed the beginning and hope to catch it again. It is about New York City's Green Cart initiative, a program that enables immigrants to become entrepreneurs through operating outdoor produce carts. They are seeing a gradual turnaround in eating patterns in the city's "food desert" areas, with people buying regularly - often as a part of their daily routine - and replacing processed, unhealthy junk and fast food with fresh fruit and vegetables. There are ancillary benefits, as the vendors get to know their customers and typical patterns of activity on their streets, thereby increasing neighborhood security. If they mentioned what happens in bad weather or the winter months, I missed that part.
I hope this concept grows and spreads to other cities. www.applepushers.com
