al fresco lunch?

  • 2

headed to the city for a girls weekend... any suggestions for a casual al fresco lunch on saturday? we will do the touristy thing first, headed to ellis island and then eataly, and then hope to have a nice lunch on our way back to our hotel near times square. opportunities to sit outside will trump menu options. thank you!

  1. This sounds like a very long day to me. The first ferry leaves at 9am from Battery Park. You have to get there 30 minutes ahead of time for the security screening. So you'll maybe leave your hotel at 8am or so to get there by 8:30am. I assume you'll probably be eating at the hotel beforehand?

It then takes a while to get to Ellis Island because the ferry stops at Liberty Island first. I think you'll get there at maybe 9:40am or so, and it takes at least two hours to see Ellis Island. So you'll leave on the 11:50am ferry and get to Battery Park by noon. Then you'll need to walk from the ferry landing to the subway and get to Eataly. You won't get there until 12:30pm or so.

If it were me, I'd just try to have lunch at Eataly because I'd be starving by then. And walking around Eataly, you will be surrounded by food. They have a rooftop beer garden. Hopefully the wait won't be too bad. Eataly is extremely crowded on the weekends.

Or you could find somewhere else to eat and go to Eataly afterwards.

Or if you truly don't care about the menu, eat outside on Ellis Island. They have some concession stands and picnic tables. Nothing fancy in terms of food, but it can be quite pleasant.
