Just returned from 3 wonderful weeks in Europe. After reading many posts and getting some responses from some of you I wanted to report on our time in Venice.

Our first night having just arrived by train in the late afternoon we wandered the Dorsoduro where we were staying and found a busy restaurant in Campo San Barnaba, Ristoteca Oniga. It was busy and noisy and a wonderful transition into Venice life. Unfortunately the food was only so-so and service almost non-existant. Chalk it up to being tired and getting to bed the priority.

On our second night we had made reservations at Osteria Oliva Nera. We were enchanted with Dino and Isabella who welcomed us on a rainy Tuesday evening. We had a lovely dinner of excellent food and wonderful wine. My husband had the duck breast and I had a local fish. Dino's grandmother's Tiramisu is not to be missed. We enjoyed our visit so much we returned for lunch two days later and were again welcomed and well fed.

Our third night we went to another local restaurant recommended by the hotel, Do Farai. There we were entertained and fed by a professional waiter and entertainer who chose a wonderful menu highlighted by a wonderful whole fish served and filleted tableside.

Our final night we decided to splurge and treat ourselves so we headed off to Da Fiore. It was the most disappointing of the trip. The food was excellent, outrageously expensive but the service was arrogant and oppressive. That alone made the experience very negative. We couldn't wait to get out of there.

Venice is like no other city in the world, with all it's hidden charms and secrets. I can hardly wait to return and discover more secrets and wonderful food.

I've generally enjoyed my meals at Do Farai, and it is best when it is not too crowded. The hosts are truly sweet.

      thanks for the report!
Just confirming you went to the Da Fiore in San Polo, and not the similarly named restaurant nearer San Marco? we had a distressing experience at the former also, though as you note the food is excellent.

Yes, it was Da Fiore in San Polo.
