We are having a graduation party at our house in a few weeks and wanted to have carne asada, chicken and carnitas for the meal. Does anyone have any suggestions on who can cater this party for about 70 or so? Thanks.

You might talk to either Carnitas Uruapan or El Indio. Carnitas Uruapan has better food, but they might not cater.

El Indio definitely caters. Carnitas Uruapan is located in Lemon Grove (at least the American branch). Don't know if they cater, but would definitely second this recommendation.

What's the matter, Mijo? Don't you have an abuela? This sounds like a typical backyard party at half my neighbors' houses in Lemon Grove, Chula, or South San Diego.

I don't mean to be flip, but this is very basic (and very excellent) fare. Any South bay caterer or Mexican restaurant could probably help you -- even the ones that specialize in lumpia. I shouldn't read this board; it always makes me soooo hungry!
. . jim strain in san diego.

Yes, it is very basic fare. One in which I could do and have it turn out great. Especially since I purchased one of the new large grills from Costco. It rocks! I just don't want to do it though...at least not for 70 or so. I would not be able to enjoy any margaritas! It's always hard to find a place that can do home cooking well.

Carnitas uruapan will basically sell you what you want (xlb per person) just as on their regular menu. I might do that and have my parent's pick it up on their way since they are coming from Mt. Helix. I've thought about El Indio since it's in the neighborhood but I am not a big fan of theirs. To me it doesn't taste like home cooking. I will probably have El Cuervo do most everything but the carnitas and the tortillas. Tortillas will be freshly made...I can taste them now. If you have any other suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Amen to your take on El Indio. And another AMEN to El Cuervo.

You might check out Tortillería Gabriel on Imperial near 17th for your tortillas.

And if you need pan dulce for anything, go to Panchita's at Broadway and C. It's the best pan dulce north of the border.

You took the words right out of my mouth. El Indio isn't my favroite either, El Cuevo is loads better.

I was going to recommend Gabriel for tortillas as well, they're some of the best I've found in San Diego.

We are having a couple of women from old town come up to the house and make fresh tortillas. Friends have all of the equipment, we just need to provide the corn and flour ingredients. I am salivating just thinking of the hot tortillas!

Gayla, I can tell that we like the same places. Wish you were here to go to lunch with me today~I'm going with a friend for *birria* at a huge place that's famous for it, El Chololo. Stewed goat meat (then plated and glazed in the oven), hot consomé (the goat-stewing liquor), frijolitos with melted cheese, fresh hot tortillas, wonderful salsas...it's fantastic. One day I will lure you down here.
