Has Le Paradis Gone Downhill Recently?

Arcadiaseeker May 7, 2012 10:34 AM

My friend's birthday is coming up - I am taking her to Le Paradis because she has never been and it is a bit of a Toronto institution. But I've been hearing that the food has gone seriously downhill in recent months. I have not been in over a year. Can anyone confirm if this is true or whether it's still up to its former standards (competent bistro-type fare)? Has anyone tried it recently and if so what was your experience like?

Has it gone downhill? Not in my experience. Mind, I haven't been in a few months. But "consistency" is the word for Le Paradis, and has been for decades. You won't be wowed, you won't be surprised - the flank steak and frites, for example, tastes exactly as it did the first time I had it - but you'll eat well, and at an attractive price. I get there a few times a year - because of the traffic around town nowadays, much less than I used to - but it has delivered the goods most every time out.

In my experience there last week, they're as consistent as ever. Go and enjoy!

Totally agree with the comments. I've been going there for years and was there just a few months ago. It won't super wow you but it won't disappoint either. Great food, good value for money, not really noisy, great homey feel and a French ambience you don't find in many other places in the city.

Is that a Freudian slip? :)

Okay thanks everyone for weighing in - I will report back if our meal is any worse/better than my other experiences there.

I've said this on so many other LP threads..... so why not again!!

I grew up on Le Paradis. I always loved it. It was always special to me.

However as I've grown older either they've "gone downhill" or my tastes have simply changed. I find their food VERY meh. Wonderful fries still though.

Mostly, I cannot take their ridiculous service. Very cool and unpleasant.

I don't go anymore and my parents, after a visit last week, have had enough as well.

As an alternative, I give a mighty thumbs up to Jacque's Bistro du Parc, on Cumberland in Yorkville.

The food is okay at Jacques - however, I had terrible service there last year. My friend emptied her change purse on the table to find twoonies and the owner/ waitress was disgusted and pretty much said so. I used to love the place but that really turned me off!

Oh really, eh, that's not good. Odd, since service has always been pretty warm there. Yeah that really sucks. No call for that.

I am so glad that somebody started this thread because yesterday night, I had the most awful service ever. It was Friday, and busy but nobody bothered refilling my water or gave me more bread. The staff went nuts trying to clear tables. I waited forever to place my order while the gentleman next to me who was seated a few minutes later got to be served in some French words first. Then I shot out my French to the blond waitress so she can see I am super fluent. My husband was disgusted and the food was just OK. After going there for 3 years, I am no longer interested. C'est fini Le Paradis, au revoir! There are other great new restaurants like Richmond Station where the Chef actually comes out to chat with you and appreciates your clientele. And their prices are as low as LP.

I was going to add my 2 cents but just noticed this post is a year old and I already chimed in way back when.

                My opinion hasn't changed....
