Seoul, Korea - A Taste of Modern Korean Cuisine at Shinsegae
Shinsegae's glamorous main store reminded me of Taipei's gorgeous Shin-Mitsukoshi - pretty ironic, seeing that this Korean department store chain's spanking new building was actually built on what was the site of Mitsukoshi's old Seoul outlet which, in the1930s, was the largest and oldest department store in Korea.
On the 10th floor of this building was a host of well-patronised family-style restaurants, offering a plethora of dining options: Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean-noobles, Korean-dumplings, Korean-rice, etc. Yup, those Korean restaurants really *do* specialise - so you can't your bibimbap and your bulgogi, too :-(
I chose Korean-barbecue. Interesting options - marinated minced beef was delicious and sweetish from the marinade (the way I like it), and a deliciously-moist grilled mackerel .
Side-dishes given included radish and Chinese cabbage kimchi, a spicy cold water kimchi, beansprouts tossed with sesame oil, and a tasty "doenjang" (beanpaste) soup. The five-grain rice was mind-blowing - the perfect texture for a rice dish, if there ever was one :-)
Loved *everything* about this restaurant.
Oh, I forgot: I hated *one thing* there - for someone who'd struggled using chopsticks all my life, those silver thin Korean chopsticks were a TOTAL NIGHTMARE! Who in G*d's name invented those infernal things?!!
