West Village Dinner

3 friends and I are coming up to New York from DC for just one night to see a play at the New Ohio Theater in June. 3 of the 4 of us are new moms who don't get away much so are looking for a special dinner somewhere close-ish to the theater. Special meaning either really fun, new &/or different OR amazing food OR a little bit of a splurge/ special occasion spot.

Price range-- "dirt cheap" on up to low $30s for an entree.

No Italian. Most other cuisines okay.

A little over our desired price range but one we were considering is Annisa (feedback welcome).

Thanks for your help!

    1. That second link thegforceny posted is a great starting point for research to help you narrow down your options / question. There are so, so many restaurants that could fit your criteria, it's hard to help you with suggestions!

A few ideas to throw out there to hopefully get the conversation started:

Small, intimate groups can be fun at Buvette if you like sharing plates. Other places that I think might be more unique to NYC and/or unusual and/or fun: Wong, Takashi (might be over your price range since cost for small plates add up), Kin Shop, Keste (no reservations), Joseph Leonard (no reservations), Fedora (no reservations).

For new(ish) / trendy / fun, consider Tertulia and Red Farm in the WV; The Dutch in SoHo; or any of the Momofuku restaurants in the East Village. I haven't been, but Acme is insanely trendy right now. Two great reviews in this thread:

I really like Annisa and take my parents every time they're in town, but it is a little staid for both food and decor, compared to many of these other restaurants.

[For other Chowhounds: The New Ohio is on Christopher, close to Greenwich St. (not Greenwich Ave.)]

This is a fantastic list! Thank you. You hit the nail on the head when you said something more unique to NYC and unusual-- that's exactly what we're looking for.

I think we ruled Annisa out-- definitely don't want something staid for our one girl's night out so might save it for a future trip.
