What is the appeal of Fox and Hound???
In recent months the Fox and Hound in Quincy has been slammed with a full parking lot. It lured me in tonight because I thought I was missing out on something special. OMG what was I thinking. We sat at the bar and were greeted with totally inattentive staff and it didn't get better, uncleared dishes etc. Lobster Mac and cheese was a simple white sauce with only the faintest hint of cheese tossed with lobster. It wasn't baked but at least you could pick out the lobster. Chicken salad was served on a warm roll; the type you take out of the freeze and bake but it never gets golden, it just makes the salad warm yuk!!!! Despite this the bar was three deep wiith people reaching over you and hanging on your chair. Don't they know there are better places n Quincy.
I live in Wollaston, so it's convenient.
First time, maybe it was an off night.
Second time, holy s**t, this place is bad.
There wasn't a third time. You would literally do better going to Grumpy White's for a burger than going to the Fox & Hound for the $17 swordfish ala hockey puck entree. I see these Groupon deals come up and they would need to pay me to eat there.
Super conveneient to me too, but I can not recommend. Every few years I give it a new shot. Been 3 times in the last year. It's really mediocre.
I like the bar side--the stone wall and fireplace are lovely, the decor at the holidays are really impressive. It's a great winter room. Nothing wrong with the restaurant side, but the bar sid eis really atmospheric.
I have yet to like-nevermind love- the food. Their menu reads well, but they fail on execution. their food's like a 5 or 6, when it out to be at least a solid 7 or 8 (with the occasional 9). I love the description of their duck, but it never pleases. Sigh, I loves me some good duck.
I will say they have a decent burger last time I tried it. Decent, not great.
They make a good martini (gin, dry for me). But they will only make one!!! (But you can switch to another , non-amartini drink).
That said, since it is so close to home, I will probably go again. BF likes the occasional PRime Rib and theirs is, well, prime rib.
During my "let's give it another shot" phase, I did get a Groupon--so I will be going again sometime soon.
I'd have to say it's a place tp have a martini, then grab a burger and a beer in the witer on the bar side. That's not so bad if you go in expecting that.
I had never been there either, until a couple of months ago. I have to say I was impressed. I wasn't expecting much, based on what I've read here, but we had an excellent meal and good service. I'm not sure what was wrong the night you went, and I had the Jambalaya, so I can't speak about the Lobster Mac. But my meal was very tasty and everyone else in our party was happy with theirs as well.
But this is why I suppose you never see a restaurant with 100% universally good ratings. I know I've heard great things about other places here, but I've been disappointed when I finally tried them.
I haven't been there for a few years. We always had good service. The food was well prepared, your basics, steak tips, mussels, nothing special. What I did notice was that it was very much a local watering hole. Except for our party, it seemed like everyone knew each other, and the wait staff.
