Drink... Diverticulosis?

I've got diverticulosis and was wondering not only if people still drink with it but what do they rec'? I grew up watching people drink milk then some sort of beverage with ulcers. That's not my style so is there any drink that might be easy on the stomach?

  1. I don't have any personal experience with this, but an older thread here talks about drinks that are easy on the stomach; maybe one of those suggestions can help you.

    1. You should discuss what you intend to do with your physician.
My suggestion is beer which is naturally conditioned (carbonated) in the bottle with the yeast present. The yeast does a very good job at promoting digestion, particularly regular bowel movements. You can spot beer like this because there will be a thin layer of yeast in the bottom of the bottle.
But make sure you ask your physician about it first.

      1. I am not a physician, but my father has diverticulosis. He's very meticulous about avoiding celery and nuts and seeds, etc, but he doesn't seem to have any trouble with drink although he does tend to drink rather sparingly by habit. My own understanding is that with diverticulosis it's important to avoid foodstuffs which are not easily digestible and could be caught in the intestine, leading to infection. I don't see how alcohol would factor into this, but I reiterate--I'm not a physician.

        1. This made me remember a Northern Exposure episode, where everyone became different personalities in NYC, and Maggie drank martinis with PeptoBismo added.

I'm not seriously recommending this by the way, just lightening the mood!

Speaking from personal experience, avoid pureed drinks with berries (strawberry smoothies, strawberry daiquiris/margaritas come to mind). I get very sick with raw berries. I have a mild form of diverticulosis. I don't go near any kind of fruit smoothies.
