Mid Coast Maine Musings - May 2012

MidCoastMaineiac May 1, 2012 08:23 AM

Another slow day, figured I'd throw out some more thoughts.

I took a peek in the new bar/cafe moving in next to the Black Parrot in Rockland (the old Rock City space) and it looks great! Very cool looking vibe...sort of an understated "urban" look to it. The name will be the Fog Bar & Cafe (pic attached). At least it doesn't have "Rock" in the title =).

In Good Company (Rockland ME) only has three more "Food Journey Thursdays" left this season...the next one this Thursday is Spanish Tapas featuring Sobrassada and I'm ecstatic! At the risk of exposing my online alter ego, I had mentioned to Melody how I had discovered Sobrassada on a recent trip to Barcelona and I absolutely loved it...now she's doing a whole theme around it! I think I might be feeling the pressure that any chef might have..."will they like it" etc...needless to say I can't wait!

I still take the occasional peek into the new burger/sandwich bar going in next to Rustica (Rockland, ME) but progress sure seems slow! They are completely redoing the outside of the whole building now...a good thing...that place needed a facelift.

I've ventured back for dinner quite a few times now to Rock City (Rockland ME) and chef Nick is really doing some food that just speaks to me. It's inventive, it's tasty, and it's a good value. He mixes up the specials from week to week and I couple weeks ago I probably overdid it...ordered way too much food. The highlight was the duck confit nachos...so incredibly good. With Lily Bistro now closed, it's hard to find duck confit in Rockland! He also let me sample one of his new concoctions - bacon ice cream...very good...and would be a good pairing for maybe a light pastry of some sort...not sure how he eventually worked that into his dessert menu. Had brunch there last Sunday...pork belly with poached egg served over fiddlehead hash...yum. Pic attached. Nick also said that he's going to be doing special "Mussels and Beer" night on Thursdays...15 bucks. Sounds like a great deal...last one was mussels dijionnaise (which I LOVE)...he wasn't sure what this Thursday's theme will be, but I'm sure it'll be great.

Went to Fresh in Camden ME for the first time a couple weeks ago...certainly decent enough, but nothing that really knocked my socks off. Though I always hesitate to hand out reviews to places that I've only visited once. They did have a fairly decent and inexpensive wine list, so that was a plus. I'll definitely give it another try.

Sweets & Meats (Rockland ME) did their last Sunday Night Supper Club for the season this past Sunday, but you can still go to Tex Mex Tuesdays (next one tonight). I believe that tonight she's serving Pork tamales. Yum.

There's a new place coming to Camden, in the old Zaddik's Pizza place....it'll be called "Fromviandoux"...sort of a French word mash up for cheese, meat, and pastries/dough. My understanding is that it'll serve afternoon tea (with all the accompaniments) and then french inspired dinners. I don't know of any current restaurant serving that niche...so I have high hopes!

That's it for now

Thank you, MMM. Since I'm on a diet, I can't eat hardly nothin', so I appreciate eating vicariously by lurking on foodie posts...until we eat again--Shooley

Right after I posted this I had the chili at Hole in the Wall Bagels in Rockland...man was that fantastic! I had heard about their chili before, but had never had it. Highly recommended. Authentic bagels from Brooklyn transplants too....

Thanks for the heads-up about tapas night at In Good Company - we had a great meal. And the Sobrassada? AMAZING!
