May 2012 Openings and Closings

What's on the horizon for restaurant openings and closings in the Boston area? I know that Rosa Mexicano is supposed to open on the waterfront May 8, Yakitori Zai should be opening in the South End within the next couple of weeks, and Happy's is on the verge of opening in the Fenway. Others?

318 Third Street. Near the Corner of 3rd and Binney.

        1. re: Matt H

Thanks. I should have known. Everything is on 3rd.

    1. I stopped for the first time at Raja and Rana's Indian Market on 3A in Burlington yesty. They had signs all over announcing the April 23 opening of The Mughals, an Indian restaurant in the same line of stores on the east side of the street, but closer to Dunkin Donuts. Can't find a website for it. I drove by but did not go in. The market and resto are affiliated in some way.

      1. Happy's opens tomorrow according to eater.com

        1. Jonathan's Bar & Grille should be opening sometime this month. It is located in the former Papa Gino's space on Needham St. in Newton.

I've been thinking they are about to open every time I've driven by there for the past 3 months.

My current bet is we find in a few months that it's some TV Reality show gag

Is this the same Jonathans as the one in Ogunquit?

            2. Per the posts on BostonChefs.com it sounds like they're planning to open West Bridge this month. They put some beautiful wood doors on the place the other day, but the inside has a ways to go.

Sounds like next week for West Bridge. They really threw the interior together quite fast. Walked by last night and took a peek in the windows. They used lots of whites, which I like quite a bit. Should do wonders to brighten the place up a bit. Both the Blue Room and CBC are dark, so it'll be nice to have something a little different right there.

              2. Medford.Patch reported that Carroll's in Medford Sq. opened yesterday

                1. Jonathan's opened in Newton a few days ago, Doc Popcorn opened at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, and Rosa Mexicano opens for dinner tonight in the Seaport District.

                  1. Any news on Taiwan Cafe? Have they re-opened or set a date to do so?

I heard a rumor that Taiwan Cafe has been sold. The last time I walked by it a few days ago, it was still papered up, no way to tell if any work was being done.

Damnit. I'm heading to South Station tonight and was hoping to hit Taiwan Cafe beforehand if it was reopened.

                      1. Tatte Bakery in Kendall Square opened their doors on Wednesday the 9th. I stopped by this evening and grabbed two fruits tarts and a portabella (spelled portobello in the store) & onion brioche. Haven't had the tarts yet, but the brioche was nice.

I've never visited the Tatte in Brookline, but the goods looked pretty. They have a few breakfast items, sandwiches for lunch and also a small dinner menu. Serving illy coffee. They also have cakes available by the slice and some pre-made cookies and biscottis that you can grab and go. They seem to really like nuts here - lots and lots of tarts and desserts with nuts. Individual tarts are pricey at the roughly $7 price point (not everything had signs or prices).

Always welcome any additions to the area. Interested in coming back on Friday and trying one of their bakes bread loaves. The store is on 3d St, across from Fuji at Kendall.

Nut-oriented pastries are their specialties, I am told. I wonder if Voltage and Tatte could work out an arrangement to allow customers to buy pastries at one and coffee at the other??

                          1. re: hckybg

I noticed Voltage had some Sample Macaroons from Tatte on display the day they opened, so that could happen.

I've been to Tatte twice since opening. One evening picked up two Tarts, 1 Pistachio and Cherry the other Pear. Both were very good, especially the Pear. Next morning stopped for an espresso and Croissant on my way to the T. The Croissant was one of the better ones Ive had in the area.

                            1. re: hckybg

This post inspired me to give Voltage another chance today. Got a latte and walked down to Tatte (around 430ish) for a snack. Jam brioche was very good. I like that they have little butter cookies for 25(?) cents each. Those nut tarts look like little works of art. Almost too pretty to eat.

                              1. re: hckybg

Not being a big nut lover, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Had the plum tart, and wanted more plum and less (crushed) nuttiness. Made my jaw very tired after eating it, though I did like the shell of the tart - it had a good buttery taste, without being too flake or buttery. I did like that it didn't get too soggy as they often do when paired with a custard in the center.

I'm eating the blueberry tart with hazelnuts and surprisingly not minding the hazelnuts. Ratio of fruit to nuts here is way more fruit, which I think is making the difference. You can really taste the blueberry and not too sweet.

                            2. Kingfish Hall is dead. Everyone knew this two months ago, but The Todd finally admitted it in public this week. Pity those poor PR people.

                                  1. Sad news here in the burbs when Bread 'n Bits of Ireland announced they were closing due to the owners' retirement on June 30. I am going to miss their perfect scones, nutty brown bread and lemon squares, and the homey atmosphere. I wonder how well scones and brown bread freeze...

                                    1. I walked by The Back Deck on West Street today and noticed lots of changes. After shopping across the street at Brattle Books, I asked the owner if he knew when the opening is planned for. He says they are hoping for Tuesday but it depends on some permits coming through. The place is busy and looking good.

Back Deck was having what appeared to be a staff meeting/dinner when I walked by tonight. I would guess any day. Nice looking space.

                                      2. Walked by Yakitori Zai last night and it appeared they were doing a friends and family evening. The room is greatly reconfigured from the Joe V's era, the former kitchen converted to dining space, the original dining area dominated by a big grill surmounted by a giant hood, with seating all around it in the middle of the room.

                                        1. Lots of activity all of a sudden--West Bridge opens today in Cambridge, J.P. just opened in Beacon Hill, Maggie's Farm(!) has opened in Middleton, and Life Alive is now open in Salem.

                                          1. Bummer...Kirby's Kitchen just posted the following on their Facebook page.

"Attention Kirby's fans: Whether due to the struggling economy, the difficulty of our location, or the wrath of the universe, we have decided to end this incarnation of Kirby's Kitchen. Low volume of sales has made it necessary for us to reimagine the concept of our wonderful place. We are going to focus on crafting and selling our hand-made products; such as jams, cheeses, cured meats, condiments, and of course pickles. We will be transforming Kirby's into an amalgamation of country market, deli, cafe, and bar. This was our original concept, and we moved away from it to facilitate the rapid birth of the restaurant. We will be paring down the current menu (keeping a few of your favorites), and focusing more on creating quality products for you to take home and enjoy. This, we hope, will help us get serious brand recognition as well as raise the kind of capitol we need to eventually reopen the restaurant as the kind of place we originally envisioned for Kirby's, as opposed to the place we had to be to open when we did. We hope that we may continue to count on your support, and apologise for any inconvenience this may pose to your dining plans. We will be closed for a few days to regroup and revamp, but as soon as we are ready you can come back in for a drink, a quick bite to eat, or buy some of the products you've already grown to love from Kirby's. Thanks for your support."

                                            1. Bina, both market and restaurant have closed. Recording says for renovations.

New sign outside called Sip, soon to open. Think it's from the Max & Dylan's group.

I loved Bina under the original Chef, but once he left and they took some of the best dishes off the menu it went way downhill. Not surprising they didnt last.

I remember going there once, they had suckling pig listed on the menu, I asked them what part of the pig it was and they were unable to tell me,even after consulting the kitchen...I didn't stay

I quite liked the first Bina chef, too. Tough to keep going back to see what chefs 2 through 6 were about over the course of three and a half years. I've liked many of the Bina siblings' places over the years, but the opening of this concept was extraordinarily unluckily timed, and since then, you know, five other chefs.

Babak still has a toehold in the area with JM Curley; which is looking like a home run.

If so, that's a lot of coffee-focused places in a very small area (Boston Common Coffee and Thinking Cup are right there and Sip would make a 3rd). Not to mention within a 3 min walk there are multiple DnD and Fivebucks.

                                                            1. re: Bob Dobalina

                                                                  1. re: Bob Dobalina

The big, new restaurant with all the money behind it will surely steal the search spotlight from the small coffee shop, plus anyone talking about Sip in downtown Boston will now have to ask, "which one?" I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate if someone opened a place called "Dylan and Max's."

                                                                    1. re: hckybg

                                                                      1. re: hckybg

I was once in a similar situation. I own a biz and another similar biz was using the same name. I had my attorney send him a letter saying we would take him to court if he kept using the name; cease and desist. We had the name registered with the state.

Sip Cafe could probably do the same thing and a judge would likely make a determination as to whether the Cafe and the Wine Bar were similar enough to cause confusion. Maybe some of the lawyers here could weigh in?

To throw out another possibility, maybe M & D trademarked the name before Sips Cafe ever opened. It's been rumored for a while that M & D was going to take that space...or the 2 businesses came to some type of agreement on use of the name. In my situation, that's what we did. Rather than face the cost of litigation, we worked out an agreement where they made a small name change that we agreed to, and would not confuse customers.

Without knowing all the facts, it's impossible to make a call.

As an aside, I like the name Sips for a coffee shop; not so much for a wine bar/restaurant..but no one asked for my opinion..:)

                                                                        1. re: 9lives

Like Bina, it will also have a small grocery shop.eta Artisan Provisions per Eater article above..that will also sell sandwiches and prepared food..nice for the neighborhood.

                                                                          1. re: 9lives

9Lives, I'm a trademark lawyer and you understand the process pretty well. If the parties can't work it out, a judge will do an all-factors analysis under the standard of 'likelihood of confusion" including name similarity, customer overlap, how well-known the senior user is, whether there's any actual confusion (not required) etc.. 1. re: Gordough

                                                                    1) The coffee - stopped in this morning for the breakfast sandwich with a free coffee deal they are offering. The very nice woman who is one of the owners extolled the virtues of their special Italian coffee - as she put it, if you are a Starbuck's person, you will love the coffee. If you are a Dunks person, maybe not. This immediately perked up my ears.

I appreciate a fine pot of American brewed deli coffee, and the dark roast here is excellent, I had to agree. Honestly, probably the best brewed coffee I've had from the non-coffee-focused joints in the area and much more subtle yet robust than the Bucks brew. Flavorful, mellow.

                                                                    2) Breakfast sandwiches - got a fine egg and cheese - it was cheap - $2 + tax - good value -

                                                                    3) Honorable mention - nice, ripe tomatoes on my sandwich.

Nothing fancy, but all in all better than some of the tired places in the area. It's a tough location, but hopefully folks will give it a try.

There was a sign on the door that I wasn't able to read from across the street, so I'm not sure if they've closed or are renovating or some other explanation. Does anyone know more?

In this case I don't think its the name of any of the owners unless they have changed.

Granted the place was pricey, but it always seemed to do a good business when I have been in there. Not a place I would make a special trip to given the lack of value and closer options to the city, however we were always glad to have it as an option when visiting friends in that area.

The windows are still covered with paper so this is most likely a June opening. Wonder if they will fare any better than Kayuga II or Asiana Grill before that. Those were classic, along with the double cheeseburger special that cost next to nothing. I think I had my first beer in a restaurant there. That strip has changed a log, but Changsho is is still there. Has anyone been lately? Is it still good? Of course, I will date myself by remembering that before Changsho it was the Midget Deli.

In Central Sq, the Harvest Coop will be moving across the street and the Clear Conscience Cafe will be closing on or around August 1. The Finagle a Bagel on Highland Ave in Needham was closed when I stopped by this morning. The note on the door recommends checking out other locations with no indication that it will re-open. I know many on the board do not like Finagle, but I have always thought it was clearly in the "good" bagel range and well above other chain bagels.

I stopped by Cafe Fresh Bagel a few doors down instead. Very good bagel (has always been better than Finagle), but I dislike their omelet style breakfast sandwich. Way too much egg/ham, not enough cheese, and I always burn my mouth eating it.

And who knows, if the town actually votes to allow liquor sales, I'll have no reason to travel to Brookline or Cambridge TJs.

                                                                                                                              1. re: nsenada

Unfortunately, you will still have reason to travel, because in Mass. only 3 liquor licenses can be held by one owner and TJ's already has 3 in Mass.
