drinking water on Maui...bring a Brita filter or buy filtered water
In order to save money and be a little green, we have brought a Brita water pitcher to Maui for the past few years to filter our drinking water instead of buying bottled water. I noticed that Napili Market sells water for $0.52/gallon from a dispenser which they assure me is for drinking. Has anyone tried buying water at the market? How does the taste compare with bottled water? We just can't drink the tap water at our condo but I am wondering if we can just buy water by the gallon and avoid bringing the Brita pitcher this year. Thanks for your help!
In general, on the mainland (and I'd assume it'd be the same in the islands) the grocery store water dispensers do several more layers (reverse osmosis and all that) of filtering/treating water than a Brita filter, which is just the carbon filter. I'm pretty sure the machines make for a more neutral tasting water than a Brita filter does. I'd fill up jugs from the grocery store machines like I do at home.
If you just don't like the taste of the tap water from your condo, just be safe and bring the Brita filter. There is no guarantee that the water from the dispenser is any better than the water from your tap. Even if it is filtered, you still might not like the taste of it. Stick with what you are used to to in order to avoid being disappointed. You could also just try some from the dispenser on your next trip so you will know what best suits you in the future.
Just as a note, while I have never gotten water from those dispensers, my coworker always brings water bottles and fills his containers from those types of dispensers whenever we travel to Maui, Kauai, & the Big Island.
