Maui trip report and Waikiki
Had some great fish in Maui both at restaurants and grilled by hubby. The fish market in west Maui north of kaanappali was great. You have to go around 2 or later when they are back with the catch. We had waloo (butter fish), pink snapper and one other - all delicious. They also do a decent pineapple salsa. Enjoyed David Paul they even had a kid menu for our youngest. Service was good but time between appetizers and entrees was long. Hula grill noisy but okay. Mama's fish house for lunch was a highlight. We treated it more like dinner than lunch. My only regret was not getting the shrimp instead of the scampi with vanilla. My oldest son was crazy for the passion fruit brûlée. I had the banana crisp which I am normally not a fan of but it was delicious. I agree with Hunt it would be great to stay there so you don't have drive. Good selection of wine on the island and provisions. Only thing I couldn't find was the surfing goat cheese. The outdoor bar on fri at the westin villas does a gastro pub theme. It hit the spot for the kids and us for ou r first night. In Oahu, we ate lunch at Dukes and Margaritaville and a local burger chain Tony's. Dinner was Alan Wong's, Town and Roys. I loved Alan Wong we have his first cookbook. Service was top notch and they didn't make us feel bad with our kids (two boys 10 and 14). We all loved Town except the dessert menu so we headed to Frost City for Taiwanese Shaved ice. (more like frozen shave fruit) and it was delicious. Sunday the boys wanted to head to Leonard's for their Portuguese donuts. While they are made fresh and delicious I found the fillings average ie the chocolate was like instant chocolate pudding. thanks to all the chowhounders who post their tips and reports as it was helpful.
