What's your travel route? Please define close.

In regard to Raleigh, If 30 minutes is close, I think Allen and Son in Hillsborough is among the very best BBQ in the state.

Excellent. I think 30 mins away is fine. I will be traveling from Duck to Raleigh so anywhere along that route is perfect. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

If you take Hwy. 64 from the OBX to Raleigh, you will pass by Blackbeard's, near the small town of Conetoe. Do a search on here and you'll find a post with directions to it. FYI, Blackbeard's is open on Sunday (limited hours) a day on which most bbq places are closed. Allen and Son is also closed on Mondays.

We Chapel Hillians claim Allen and Son as our own. It's much closer to Chapel Hill than Hillsborough.

Yeah, I usually describe it as being between CH and Hillsborough...6 miles from downtown CH and 7 miles from downtown H'borough is pretty much equidistant.

diverting to the greenville area might be an idea you have skylight and B's there

Love it folks thanks! Unfortunately I will indeed be there on a monday. I am open to other areas too. I just want some good food in general while on this trip. Anyone know any good places that aren't too touristy in Duck?

If you look at the upper right hand corner of this page you'll see the "search" feature. type in things like 'Duck", "Outer Banks" and "OBX" and you'll find previous posts, such as:

If you are driving to Raleigh on a Monday then Blackbeard's is not an option - they are open Thursday - Sunday.

Skylight is open on Mondays. I really like them a great deal, but bear in mind that their offerings are limited and the style is quite pure to their vision. I've brought some folks there who were not happy since the food was much different than what their expectations of bbq (and cornbread) were. That said, I'd eat there anytime - any day in a heartbeat!

Skylight is some of the best BBQ I had in state, but I don't know what to make of that cornbread. I love that you see the guy chopping in the window as people order. Is B's BBQ open on Monday? If so that may be a good bet also very good but better choice of sides.

If you want BBQ go to Skylight, if you want sides, there are plenty of alternatives, but the BBQ will play catchup.Sides are called sides for a reason. If you can find Jack Cobb's open in Farmville, you can get some great BBQ there as well.

Cobb's actually has excellent collards and killer little mini pecan and sweet potato pies for dessert- but they aren't open early in the week, either.

IIRC, B's is not open on Monday.
