Ristorante Castello Blue Bell

Any chowhounds been to Ristorante Castello recently? We planned to go tomorrow evening. The menu looks very interesting - just wondered if anyone out there was willing to share recent experiences. Saw a few posts on here, but nothing really recent. Thanks in advance for your always appreciated reviews.

I went a few months ago. A little cramped, but nice atmosphere and good service. Appetizers and meat dishes were good but the pasta we had was awful--I would avoid those. I tried the bolognese over papperdelle; the pasta itself was homemade apparently but it was not especially good, and it was literally swimming in a sweet sauce with no depth of flavor. I don't think I've had a pasta that oversauced anywhere. It's hard to recommend an Italian restaurant that messes up pasta and red sauce so bad but the veal chop we had was actually very good, as were the grilled artichokes.

Recently? No we would not visit a second time. They have a nice following from the years in a local strip mall. We found the wait staff pretentious and the food just very average at best. Better options in the area would be Mina Cutina (NYC import)or even From the Boot where you can get good American Italian with no attitude. Perhaps by following barrygs lead you might be ok!

Thank you both for your prompt reply to my post. My brother and sister-in-law are taking us there tomorrow night as a "thank you". They went to the old Lansdale location several times before they moved to Blue Bell. Will let you know how we make out. I will stay away from the Pappardelle Bolognese, per Barry's recommendation. I love that dish at Mina Cucina. Hopefully the wait staff will not be as stuffy tomorrow night. Chow.

Reporting back after our dinner at Ristorante Castello. At present, there are two dinner seatings on weekends - 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. We arrived for our 6 p.m. reservation for four people and advised that the other two guests were unfortunately running late. They seated us promptly and said it would not be a problem. Our waiter offered to open our wine and brought us bread while we waited for the other couple. Once all guests were seated, we ordered our apps - Roasted Artichokes with tomato, garlic and oil and Crab Stuffed Mushrooms. Both were excellent. Entrees ordered were Lobster Ravioli with shrimp and scallops in Aurora Sauce; Hazelnut Ravioli with Shrimp and a Frangelico Sauce, Tilapia and a special for the evening, Chilean Sea Bass with fennel and mango sauce. All were prepared perfectly and were delicious. Entree sizes are not huge, just enough if you are ordering along with apps and dessert. A selection of desserts was offered after dinner and we left just prior to the arrival of the 8:30 seating. In addition to the indoor tables, they also have a porch area which is covered. Seating times for that area are 7:00 and 9 p.m. All tables were full while we were there and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. Our waiter, Paul, did advise that they would be starting renovations shortly to add a bar area (in anticipation of their liquor license) and additional seating, which would allow for more reservation times on weekends.

Nice to hear you enjoyed your dinner and that Castellio is doing well. Certainly seems to be a sea change from my early visit there and that is a good thing for all.

Went to Ristorante Castello again tonight with another couple. The female half of the couple loves to cook and tends to be somewhat critical of restaurant food. I was therefore, understandably anxious about recommending this restaurant to her. She absolutely LOVED this place. She said the appetizers she and her husband shared were wonderful (Calamari Fra Diavalo and Spinach Salad with Goat Cheese and Pine Nuts), her salmon was cooked to perfection and said she cannot wait to go back again. We all enjoyed our meals, but I was actually blown away by how much my friend enjoyed hers, specifically. I loved my Tilapia with Mushrooms and Crab Meat as well as my appetizer of Tomato, Avocado and Fresh Mozzarella Salad. Keep up the great work, Ristorante Castello. C U again very soon.
