A fishing, hunting, foraging subforum would be a good addition

I'd love to see a subforum here focused on foraging, hunting, and fishing. To me, this is as relevant to the topics on this board as are gardening or grocery shopping for food, all are about obtaining ingredients for cooking and eating. A thread I started on fishing was deleted, I assume because it was deemed not relevant or focused to the site's subject matter, but I think those topics, to me anyway, seem absolutely relevant and I suspect there may be a lot of interest in those topics, but I could definitely be wrong there. Anyway, just my two cents. I know there are probably other sites and/or forums that focus on those topics, but in my view, they'd be great additions to Chowhound. I saw a few new subforums just opened up and thought this might be a good topic for another one.

Thanks Melanie. All good tips. If they specific types of questions you mentioned are considered on topic, that's great. I probably will want to ask about things like butchering a fresh catch, in-season fish etc. For now the thread has given me lots of good leads to look into. Thanks for your tips and help.

Looks like your thread has been restored. Happy fishing!

Thanks for fixing that. I had some browser issues last night.

Discussions about fishing, hunting and foraging are considered on-topic, in my experience, as long as they focus on the food aspects. Some examples that may be of interest to you:

Two of mine have been deleted so far, including I think one you commented on. I asked the moderators about it after the first time and was told if it's specific and related to the subforum it's on it is often left up, but after the second try, I don't think I'm going to try again. It's frustrating having a thread deleted, especially when I tried to follow the moderator's guidance on how to keep it relevant to the board. It's too bad because I've not found a fishing forum that has the same sort of focus on fishing that posters on this board seem to be able to provide. I'll check out the links you provided. Thank you!

mine was deleted too and I don't care as my point was foraging and hunting are so regional it would be hard to address across an int'l forum like CH or the web. let it go. but nice idea and perhaps a basis for your own blog

Yeah I posted mine in a regional subforum that I thought it was relevant to (where I live) but you're right if it had its own board, it might need even further subforums for each region and that might get to be too much. Or it could just not have its own board and people could post on those topics on regional boards. I think those topics would be a great fit for this board, but obviously that isn't what those who manage the site have in mind for their vision of the forum. I don't feel I'm dwelling on it, just putting out a suggestion for the forum in the appropriate subforum for that and responding to a reply to the thread I started here.

I provided those links mostly to give you a sense of the fishing-related discussions that are considered on-topic. And one is a link to the moderators post about what is and is not considered on-topic that's hunting related that I thought might help you frame your questions.

If you want to become a fisherman, don't look to this forum to teach you. Truly helpful instruction in enough detail to get you started is beyond the scope of this site. Chowhounds are a diverse and knowledgeable bunch and can probably answer questions on any kind of tangential topic you can dream up. But if you want to know which trout farms offer the fattest catch and most satisfactory experience, which salmon charter boat captains are the best cooks, how to butcher your fresh catch, what fish are in season locally and available in the markets, or the difference in taste and texture of harpooned fish vs. long line-caught, for example of what's considered food-related, ask away.

In general, the more narrowly you define your question, the better luck you'll have getting an answer. Also, if you demonstrate that you've done some research and what you already know about the topic, the folks reading along can target their response better.
