HEB Fresh Bulk Salsas

HEB is selling bulk fresh salsas in some of their stores. Manchaca and Slaughter store has them (in the deli) and I'm pretty sure I saw them at Rundberg, too (grilled chicken station).

I sampled the green and a rojas(?) last night and ended up buying a half print of each (about $1.20/ea). Pretty darn good stuff. I'll be trying the rest of them in the very near future - about 5 different kinds, IIRC. Of course I forgot that I didn't have anything to dip in them, so I ended up putting the verde in their Hill Country Fare "Homestyle" Potato Salad. Even more awesome.

Try 'em out if you have access to them. I don't know if they sell them prepackaged in any stores or not, but that would seem logical for those stores that don't have the bulk display cases.

  1. I was blown away by these HEB salsas, better than any other fresh salsa on offer in town IMHO. I bought them at the E 7th St. HEB and assumed they had some special elves making them fresh in house. I make a special trip now every week for salsa and Cafe Bustelo. Dirt cheap and food stamp eligible.

    1. the packaged ones they keep in the product section have thickeners in them, like wheat starch.
      these seems fresher and/or different, based on your descriptions.

        I'm sure you could ask for the list of ingredients, but yes - these are on display in 3-4 gallon "compartments" and they package it up on demand. These were different than what they sell in the plastic bags. Hopefully there is enough demand for them that they aren't discontinued. Just don't buy so much that they raise the price!

        Now if they could duplicate the green sauce found at El Pollo Regio/El Pollo Rico and sell that for $2.50 pint...

          i've been avoiding the plastic bag stuff with the weird ingredients.
          this sounds like a much better option!

          they just re-did the parmer/mcneil store but the new space is disappointing:
          new bulk area is all snack food instead of ingredient type stuff
          salad bar is just the same cut up fruit you can buy in plastic cups
          they got rid of the hot food case and put in pricey "my fit foods" (third party diet co.) kiosk

          but a fresh salsa bar? that would be a way better idea than the sad looking cantaloupe chunks in the expanded produce department right now.

          Which store? I told you what I know so far. Maybe others can name some of the other stores which have this feature. Maybe we could go goecaching for salsa! ;-)

            Ok goofy question. i see you did post the deli and chicken station. They must not have it in Round Rock!

        2. Are they usually in plastic tubs(like you find in the bulk section of Central Market)? If so, I'm pretty certain I saw these at the Parmer/McNeil HEB and they caught my eye! I'll have to try them out!

            I stopped by after work at the Parmer/McNeil HEB and sure enough they had some in tubs on the shelving next to the chopped fruit bar.

              oh, interesting. i did notice a bunch of guac near there last week, but that's all they had out.
              perhaps the quac was a gateway condiment...

              and i didn't know there were any other parmer/mcneil HEB hounds!

                I went back to pick up a few things yesterday evening... It is with the guac, though they definitely had a lot more salsa on Monday than they did yesterday! Last night, it was mostly guac with only a couple of salsa tubs. :(

              1. i think i saw these at the Brodie/Wm Cannon one as well, preportioned in those plastic bulk containers as Gula was saying. couple different green ones and three reds (chipotle, 'molcajete roja', and ' quemada fire roasted....or something). got the fire roasted, it is muy delicioso!

                1. I was up early this morning while the roosters were still quacking and hoofed it the 4 miles to HEB early enough to see that the salsa comes in 1 liter bags from a company called "Jalaburning"....

                  Naah... wait... <rubbing eyes> ... they say.... "Haliburton".

                  Too spooky. Why would any company call themselves "Haliburton" if they were were not THE Haliburton? Are they the new generation of ADM? Federally subsidized salsa?

                  1. Apparently their method is flash pasteurizing that gives it a longer shelf life while still maintaining the fresh aspect of the veggies (I can confirm the later). The company, Haliburton International Foods, boasts 40(?!) regular salsas and they'll also formulate and co-brand your restaurant with it's own "signature salsa".

                    Of the current two I have, the salsa molcajete verde is down to earth ingredients (all veggies, big chunks of green peppers and pureed tomatillos), the old "weird" ingredients being potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate.

                    The salsa quemeda is a roasted tomato and I'm guessing ancho pepper, but no ingredients are listed on this one. I'm not too wild about the later since I'm not fond of salsas made with dried chiles.

                      i saw some at the lake creek and 183 HEB (which i normally avoid because it's gross).
                      they had a few mislabled, as the same description was a green and red container.

                    2. The salsas to look for are the green and red "molcajetes" Both are on the spicy side and have great chunks of chiles, onions, and tomato. I'm soaking in the red right now.

                      The roasted tomato chipotle comes in second to those - a thinner concoction without the heavy tobacco of dried chiipotle. Makes a great wet chimichanga or taco sauce.

                      The milder tomatillo and the quemeda are my least favorite because they're not my style. I don't do tart or dried peppers.

                        Got the que mada on Sunday....blech!!! No heat whatsoever. Def sticking to the molcajete red....that's the roasted one, right?

                          Both the red and green molcajetes have some evidence of fire-roasted stuff in there. With big chunks of peppers, onions, and tomatoes without having that "raw" texture. Tthe chipotle is smoked, but no evidence of anything being fire roasted.

                          I don't like salsas made with dried peppers is why I didn't like quemeda, but I can see how some people might like it.
