When crowded, Church & State is LOUD. So, it depends on whether this is a first date. For that matter, Pizzeria Mozza in L.A. is even LOUDER; I have no idea about the one in Newport Beach, though. In either case, I would expect it to be difficult to have a real conversation.

Church and State wins for date night. The room, bar, nice lighting, overall vibe is about as good as it gets. The food, although a shadow of it's former self, is still good.
I haven't been to Mozza Newport but if it's consistent with LA, the food definitely wins. It's OK for a casual date night if you don't want the pressure.›2 Replies-

I find the pizzas just a touch better at Mozza LA, but it's barely noticeable. Everything else is identical. Parking is not an issue if you just valet.
They are so far apart from each other I would go with whichever is closer. I've done date night at both and both have worked well. You'd hate to have to drive an hour home after dinner if it's date night...
