Places for rehearsal dinner in Charlotte

My fiancé and I are starting to look for places for our rehearsal dinner. We have some ideas, but want to see if anyone has any suggestions we have not thought of yet. We expect about 70 people for the dinner.

  1. Mazel Icky! What time of year are you thinking? Indoor/Outdoor? Let me know what you already have in mind and I'll see if I can add on.

Gracias, southernitalian! We looked into Halcyon but believe it will be above our budget. Carpe Diem was of interest, but it is too small. We would love to do it in Bistro La Bon, but we're not entirely confident it will be open for another year. Vivace is also a possibility depending on the price and whether they can accommodate a party of 70.

The rehearsal dinner will be almost exactly a year from now, on April 19. We plan on having the dinner indoors, but if there are options that have access to outdoor balconies or patios, that is always a plus.

How about Pewter Rose? They have that separate room for functions (not sure if it can fit 70 though) and the balcony. My last two meals there were misses but I did attend a rehearsal dinner there a few years back and it was gorgeous! Interesting that you think Bistro La Bon won't last through the year. Do tell.

It's not so much that I think it won't last, I just have my concerns. I was there a few weeks ago on a Thursday night just for cocktails. It was about 7:00 and there were only a couple tables occupied. I do hope they stay open, and maybe that night was an anomaly. Of course the DNC is probably going to give every restaurant in town a little boost for a little while. My understanding is that every decent restaurant in town is booked up for that week.

Yeah, we've already been warned to plan to work from home that week. I guess I'll also be eating at home as well. Hey Icky, how about Bonterra? There's also this great Korean place out on 74 (I kid).

Geez. My memory is really bad. It was only a few months ago when this topic came up. And of course I recommended Ri-Ra which I deliberately avoided doing today. Until now.

              1. re: southernitalian

Thanks for that link. I totally forgot about that, too.

                1. re: southernitalian

I've actually been to one at Ri-Ra and it was surprisingly good (if you don't mind the casual atmosphere). Contrary to a lot of restaurants, their private party food was much better than their regular menu.

        2. Wow, congrats icky!!! I think a celebratory lunch is in order! ;-)

You mentioned Halcyon and maybe a budget issue there. Halcyon and Fern are part of the Something Classic group which includes a catering division headed up by Exec chef Blake Hartwick. He is a good friend and has co-cheffed with Marc Jacksina and does good food. In fact him, Marc and Alyssa @ Fern are all cooking together at The James Beard House in June. Anyway, I thought maybe a catered event. I have NO IDEA about their fees or site availability but it's certainly worth looking into. Check 'em out here:

Also, have you spoken with anyone at Halcyon? I wouldn't count them out until you speak to someone there first. See if you can chat with the chef.

You know, Mark Hibbs (former owner & chef at Ratcliffe on the Green) is back in town and has a new place in Ballantyne called Blackthorne Restaurant and Pub. They have a private room, a rooftop bar and a great, affordable menu. Southernitalian, Hungry Donkey and I had lunch there not too long ago.

Barringtons is probably going to be costly too. Harvest Moon Grille? I haven't been in a while. They've got that other room though. Oooh, Ilios Noche is doing a renovation/expansion right now - I love their food and eat there often. I'm not sure what the renovation will look like but they will be doubling their size.

Also, I love Greek Isles and the place is huge, they have outdoor patio seating and the price is right.

Thanks, lynnlato! I'm up for a celebratory lunch.

We did speak to the folks at Halcyon, and that's when we learned it's above our budget.

            We're continuing with our research...

Ding ding ding on the lunch thing -- I'm in.

Has anyone eaten at Zink in South Park lately? Size-wise would fit plus they have that great outside area.

Rooster's has that small wine bar area across from the main restaurant -- I wonder if they can set up tables in the atrium just outside that space?

              1. re: HungryDonkey

Is Zink where we tried to stalk Ric Flair? Next to Cowfish? I get very confused over there. That place had a great outdoor space. It would be a great spot for a private party. I've only eaten at it when it was uptown in the IJL building.

                1. re: southernitalian

Yesss!!!! That is the place! Ha! It is a pretty space. I've not eaten there though to know about the food. Maybe we should have lunch there to check it out.

                  1. re: lynnlato

I thought their food at their old Uptown location was bad, but maybe the Southpark location is better.

                    1. re: carolinadawg

Yea, now that you mention it carolinadawg, we once had tapas at the uptown place and I wasn't crazy about the food or the atmosphere. The atmosphere at the SP location is really nice, but I don't know about the food either. Hmm, maybe someone in the know will chime in.

                      1. re: carolinadawg

Yes, I'll agree the uptown one was kind of gorss, but i used to work in the building so we'd go downstairs for drinks after work sometimes. I did eat at M5 once and thought it was really good.

Hey icky, Blackthorne just opened their rooftop patio. I drove by it the other day. It looks gorgeous. I wonder if they'd let you use it?

                        1. re: southernitalian

Umm, pay attention, I already suggested Blackthorne and linked to it up above. Keep up. ;-)

                    2. re: southernitalian

I wouldn't call it "stalking." Oh wait, nevermind. We were.

                    3. re: HungryDonkey

I like Zink. But they have good and bad days. Dinner service has been better then brunch. We had many more misses at brunch with food coming out cold. But I haven't been to dinner there since Dec 2011. Last time I had their lobster mac and cheese and it was very decadent. Time before that I had their Wagyu burger and it was out of this world! Looking at their current menu makes me want to go back.

                    4. re: ickymettle

FYI, Ilios Noche just confirmed for me that their new space will have a "beautiful private dining room for large parties". Worth checking out, IMHO. ;-)

Lunch! Icky, since it's in your honor, you should choose. I'll send out emails. Yay!
