I just wanted to thank you all for your guidance. I loved San Fran and everything we ate was delicious! It was my first time there so I will be returning to hit some things we missed. But here's where we ate:

First night staying in Union Square and went to Sams Grill. Very good and reminded us of old school seafood places in PA. Had the snapper and scallops with au gratin potatoes.

Second day... Lunch at Tartine bakery. OMG I will crave this meal every day of my life. Asparagus open faced from age blanc with those yummy pickled carrots. Also had the banana cream tart and a pain au chocolate and cafe au lait. Phenomenal!

Dinner was in North Beach at a great little pizza place we found while walking around... Cafe BaoNecci. White bean soup, salad with apples, Swiss cheese and walnuts and plain old margherita pizza.

We got some Italian cookies to go at some shop on Columbus.

Ferry Building - blue bottle cafe au lait, cowgirl creamery toasted cheese, vegan doughnut of some sort,

House of Nanking... I know it gets mixed reviews on here but we had the best Chinese feast - onion pancakes, house noodles, shrimp lettuce wraps. Unbelievably good combination.

Loved it al and can't wait to go back! Next trip will include:
Burma superstar
Kokkari
Delfino pizza
Zuni

Skip Burma Superstar and go to Mandalay instead http://www.mandalaysf.com/
Tea Leaf Salad and Mandalay Special Noodle in particular.

Thanks for the report! I'm glad House of Nanking worked out for you, despite the naysayers: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/838537

Cool - out of interest in comparison, where are the second / third place Chinese Places?
