Are they still doing the steam table with the various guisados ?

      1. re: moose734

they re-opened recently so it was kind of chaotic but the tacos were tasty. it's nice to have an inexpensive non-chain eatery in the area.
they had tacos, burritos, tamales, tortas &quesadillas on the menu, perhaps they'll do more once settled in.

          meats included
Al Pastor , Carne asada, Barbacoa (lamb), Carnitas, Chorizo, Lengua (tongue), Pollo - pretty standard.
served w/ cilantro & onion & a very nice green tomatillo salsa.
I'll have the lamb & tongue!

No guisados. Just tacos, tostadas, etc . . . but very tasty meats. Also good frijoles de olla. Best taqueria in Washtenaw County. Then again, competition is thin.

            1. re: trapani

the closed coney around the corner (on Maple / Liberty) has a sign-
              taqueria opening soon!
              more competition!
the menu at Taco King has been growing, menudo is now listed.
I tried the tripe taco @ taco king & did not like it , it was tender but had a strong offal, livery taste.
I've had tripe before & thought it was OK, it had a milder flavor, but there are different types, I'm not sure which one of the 4 cow stomachs they used.

              1. re: Michigan Mishuganer

Was it tripe or did it say tripas ? Because I thought tripas actually referred to intestines and I see that on many taqueria menus.

                1. re: moose734

                  It was tripas!
                  Thanks moose734, that's why I didn't enjoy it .
                  it didn't look like tripe!
                  Italian = trippa
What is the word for tripe in Spanish?
I will definitely avoid the intestine dishes at Ypbor Yan!
                  (unless it's sausage casing)

                  1. re: Michigan Mishuganer

Actually I'm a big fan of pork intestine dishes at most Chinese places. They definitely seem to taste "cleaner" than you might expect. I recall having a tripas taco at Taqueria La Fiesta before and wasn't a fan of that prep ( they were fried , as opposed to the steamed ones I sometimes get with carnitas at Dos Hermanos)

                    1. re: moose734

so "spicy pork intestine in a hot wok" might be delicious! that's good to know.

                      1. re: Michigan Mishuganer

If that's the one that had the slivers of potatoes in it, then it is actually quite good.

                    2. re: Michigan Mishuganer

Tripe in Mexican Spanish—"pancita," I think.

                      1. re: Jim M

Outside of Menudo, I can't recall having any tripe (beef or pork) at a Mexican place. I'd actually be pretty interested to try a pork tripe taco.

                    1. re: Jim M

Tripas? Just stay away from the mystery meats & order the very good tacos al pastor!

          2. they now have fish tacos on the menu. tilapia.

I need to try this place again. My experience at Chela's ( LIberty and Maple) was pretty 'meh". THey did have good tamales though.

              1. re: moose734

I agree, Taco King's food is tastier than Chela's & we prefer the atmosphere at Taco King, even though Chela's is more "upscale"
                Taco King's tamales-
We thought the Central American (banana leaf) tamales were tastier than the Mexican (corn husk) tamales.

            2. Taco King will be adding Tunisian food to the menu soon, in addition to the delicious Mexican food.

Wow! and my guess is this won't be $30/person Zingerman's pop-up Tunisian food.

                  from their facebook page:
We have big news: starting this upcoming Monday (the 22nd) we will open a Tunisian food deli side by side with Taco King, serving couscous, lablabi, tagine, ojja merguez, and many other Tunisian dishes, every day. Check it out.
